Pilot Bearing: Is the Bentley Incorrect for an '87?
I'm in the middle of a clutch job (plus "while you're in there...go ahead and replace everything") and we're in the process of putting Humpty Dumpty back together.
At the pilot bearing stage the Bentley says: "For 1984-1986 models: Pilot bearing is lightly pressed into the center of flywheel" and "On 1987-1989 models: Pilot bearing is held by three bolts to holes at rear end of crankshaft. My '87 has three holes with no bolts and the previous bearing was pressed into the flywheel, which is how we put it back together. Before we mate the tranny and engine I'd like a quick gut check that this is right. Pics attached: 1. Bentley instructions 2. Back of engine / crankshaft 3. Original flywheel 4. Shiny new flywheel ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

So Bentley is wrong and the three threaded holes are not used on a G50? It also says lubricate the bearing…it’s sealed so how would you do this? Maybe they refer to the one that’s not pressed in.

I lightly lubricated the outside of the bearing with lithium grease just to help with it sliding in to the flywheel. The instructions were vague and the location of where to grease would have been helpful.
