Early 911 Battery Box Size - Sealed Battery Replacement

Unfortunately my 72 911 is at the shop a 100+ miles away or I would measure it myself, so I hope some kind soul might walk to their garage for a measurement! What are the battery box dimensions for a 1972 911?

Also, any recommendations from the forum on sealed battery replacements that actually fit in the battery box, perhaps on its side with the top terminals facing out? I know optima is a common sealed battery but I haven't had much luck with their website. Anyone every used Hawker (Enersys) Odyssey Batteries in their 911?

Much obliged...

Hey Hopper,
My 1973 is converted to one 12-volt battery, which is nested in the drivers side fender well. Only a series 42 flooded battery fits in that spot. I just bought a new battery and the 42 just fits in enough to get allow the negative cable over the battery to the ground piece on the body. I use a rubber tie down strap to hold it on and that does not seem to be a problem. Gel batteries? Thats another issue.

1973.5T

For an exact fit, http://www.sonnenschein.org/. I believe it is a A512/40 A.

Thanks for the info Bob. Luckily my battery boxes are in pristine condition and I want to try to keep them that way, hence the track towards a gel battery from a tradition. By conversion to one 12 volt, did you just remove the positive cable from the "far" battery? Any special trick involved? I had always heard the german engineers did the two battery bit more for balance than power. Ever heard of anyone using weight in the empty box?

I'd appreciate the height, width, and depth of the battery box if you had a minute to measure it up on your car, I can't find the dimensions I scribbled down and can't get to the car for another few weeks (its away at the shop...far far away...)

The conversion is easy and detailed somewhere on this forum. You could easily just install a weight in the unused box. I would keep the passenger side one as there is a driver on that side.
