Electrical Component - What Is This?

I've searched and look over the forums, parts catalogs and shop manual, but have not yet found a good component diagram.

1. What is the silver box in this picture?

2. Does anybody have some diagrams, or know where to find? Thanks! Mine is a '78SC if it matters.

A similar looking device on my 88, but found under the dash, is the cruise control regulator.

I'm sure smarter people than I will soon give you the answer.

Looks more like a control component for aftermarket radio or changer. but I would trust input from others.

It looks like the aftermarket Hofco burglar alarm that was installed in my '74.

My car does have an alarm - disabled I assume since it starts without entering anything in the keypad. Previous owner shrugged shoulders too. Is this not on other SC's?

Are the three black cables lying on top of the box, connected to the box? If so, it looks like they are not connected to anything. Can you remove the box and see if there is a label on the underside?

Dave

Out of curiosity, what is that "filter thingy" with the hose in the lower left of your pic?

Round thing on the lower left is the air horn pump.

Bet that the thing you are looking at on the upper right is an alarm.

Looks like a motion sensor for a pretty old style alarm system.

My standard answer is "the flux capacitor" but perhaps an early version.....

Looks like an alarm module.

Do you mean a horn that actually let's someone know you exist instead of the pitiful "me me" that my horn emits ?

Neither a Hofco alarm nor motion sensor. I installed Hofco for 20 years and the control boxes were black, blue, or green plastic. Never saw or located a motion sensor that large or in that location. My guess is that it is an old 3 watt cell phone brain. You can tell by the inputs (antenna connector, power cord, multi pin connection for the handset). Alarm systems are mostly RF controlled and the metal case would defeat most remote control RF. 1978 was still the era of keypad alarms that did not use RF so it might be a very old alarm. Either way, not factory PORSCHE.
Regards,
Charles

Someone must have stolen your good horn, because mine is a two-trumpet unit that just sounds great, as horns go. Having Said That, the horn for my alarm is the nastiest noise you have heard. Factory porsche, but gnarly.

Sorry for jacking the thread.

Bench,
Yep, my Hofco was black plastic. It caused me a multitude of problems because I paid to have it removed when I bought the car and believed that it was removed only to find out last year that it was still active in the ignition and fuel pump circuits, causing an intermittent "no start" condition.

Hmm...I've got the "two-trumpet" (don't know if "both work"), but mine emits the wimpiest sound you've ever heard. I'm much better off just "blipping the throttle" to let someone know I'm around
