Engine re-installation woes Help!

I'm in the process of re-installing my motor after a rebuild and it's been so long since I removed it that I've forgotten where a few wires go. If someone could assist me it would be appreciated. Here are my questions...?

1. Where does the braided ground strap from the transmission connect to?
2. There is a large black cable coming from the from of the car.. looks like a main ground, I'm not sure where to connect it? It runs near the passenger side of the transmission.
3. The alternator. I have 2 wires one large positive (red) I'm pretty i know where it goes but the other is small yellow wire and my starter has two areas that this wire could possibly attach to? Which one is the right and do only two wire connect to the starter?

4. Last but not least... I've saved the best for last, how to I reinstall the shift lever, spring and linkage to the transmission (915).

If I could get some help with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day!!

If you haven't already look at the engine drop article in tech forms http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_engine_drop/911_engine_drop-1.htm
has photos, it should be a great help.

1. There is a stud coming from the pan near where the trans pokes into the cab on the passenger side.
2. The starter (if I understand the wire you're talking about)
3. Can't remember
4. Are you refering to the clutch cable and springs at the bottom of the trans?

Warning these are all off of the top of my head and my memory fails me some times so I hope this helps. I believe someone also posted the engine drop article from this web site and that should be very helpful.

Hope this helps

1. There is a bolt sticking out of the body near the hole for the shift coupling. Passenger side. The ground strap goes there with a washer and nut.

2. Large black cable on passenger side? Not sure. The clutch cable is on the drivers side. The only other connection I can think of is for the speedo. It has 2 blade connectors on mine.

3. Yup. Only 2 connections for the starter. The red wire attaches with a nut and washer. The yellow with a blade connector pushes on one of the terminals. Don't remember which off the top of my head.

4. Shift lever depends on how you took it off. Hopefully, you just removed the special bolt that connects the shift coupler to the shift rod of the tranny. Then, all you need to do is push the coupler back onto the rod and so the threaded hole in the coupler lines up with the hole in the rod and insert bolt. I don't remember on my SC, but on the older cars the bolt has a point that goes into the shift rod hole and then you should use some wire to keep it in place. I think the SC didn't have one or both of those features though.

Is the spring you are talking about for the clutch? If so, you will want to take a look at the clutch adjustment tech article http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_clutch_replace/911_clutch_replace1.htm

I hope I have been a little helpful. My engine is still on the stand and I am hoping to get it back in yet this month. Still lots to do and little time to do it!

Good luck.

The large black wire/cable under the car on the right side of the tranny should be the main positive lead to the starter, not a ground.

What year is your car?

Hi and thanks for the input. Ok here's where I am at now.

Thanks for the info on the braided transmission cable ground... I found the stud on the passenger side. Perfect!
I think I'll be OK with the clutch, I have a few manuals with pictures and I'll try to figure it out.

The only things I still need help with is that big black approx 10 AWG cable with an eyelet on the end? It looks like a main ground from the battery or something but I have no idea for the life of me where it goes. I'm still in need of help as far as that goes. Also my starter solenoid has 3 possible places where connections could go. The largest one is obviously the positive and if someone knows which of the other two is used It would be appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who replied and I look forward to your responses.

It could be that the wire coming from your battery to your starter was replaced with one that has black sheathing. On my 74, the wire from the alternator and the wire from the battery both attach to the same post on top of the starter. The yellow wire then attaches to the spade on the starter.

Strosek,

1). The black cable with eyelet is the main cable (+) from the battery. The big yellow wire connect to the right and the yellow with blue stripe goes below the big yellow wire.

From picture below, I used BIG RED Cable instead of BLACK.

Just re-installed my engine this past weekend. The black cable with the eye on the passenger side should bolt to the largest post on the starter. 13mm box end wrench should do the trick. Post a pic to confirm

Thanks guys I really appreciate the help! I think your right on, it must be a positive from the battery and it goes to the starter as well. My car is a 77 with a 92 3.8l, the whole car is pretty much custom at this point, I've re-done just about everything, figures it's a stupid thing like this to have me stumped.
To confirm what that black cable comes from I'll do a continuity test from both sides of the battery just to be sure but I think that your right and it's a positive.

As far of the other cable on the starter, I have no spade connections on my solenoid, just the large positive and two small screw type connections. If I can find my digital camera I'll post some pics.

Thanks again!!
