Billet gearbox intermediate plate

I'm thinking about adding one to my 911 gearbox in my '71 when I do a rebuild.

Can I get some opinions on who makes the best one?

Anyone with good or bad experiences?

Cheers

An aluminum intermediate plate is a worthwhile addition when you rebuild. Keep in mind you will need to measure your existing pinion depth and backlash and reset to the same numbers with the new intermediate plate. This is a good opportunity to replace all six bearings. You will also need to set the differential bearing preload.

A Type 911 will live just fine with a 2341S engine if everything is correct. When you go to rebuild, be prepared to replace the R&P if necessary. I just took apart a virgin ’71 with about 200K+ and it is beautiful – except for the shifting parts and the just now failing R&P. Obviously it was driven correctly (and the clutch never dragged) for the shifting to have lasted. I suspect if it had bearings at 100K, the pinion would still be serviceable.

I can’t offer an opinion on the best source for an aluminum plate but I wish Porsche had done this originally.

On the other hand, if your intermediate bearings are tight in the magnesium plate and the pinion is good, I would be temped not to change anything other than bearings.

Too bad we are half world away or I would volunteer to measure all the pinion settings.

Cheers,
Grady

Hi Cam:

We make those things,........

These 7075 T6 plates are strongly recommended for all 901's that will see some hard use.

Contact me directly if I can help.

Thanks Guys

Grady I've been researching the major issues to address when a rebuild is being done.

My car is a July '71 build. Do you know when the simplified differential was changed?

I'd love to have a go at the rebuild myself but am lacking facilities and time at present! Maybe I can do the next one....

Thanks again.

Cam

Cam,

I also make a billet intermediate plate, and will be in your neck of the woods at the end of September for 3 weeks. Send me an email if still in need of a plate. don@dwdesignwerks.com

Cheers, Don.

John,

Karen and I are considering a trip. I wonder how many Porsche parts I can carry-on?

Best,
Grady
