911 RS taillights on short hood 911

I was wondering if they would look good on a short hood 911, more specifically, a 78 SC with IROC bumpers. Obviously the rear reflector strip would be painted to match. Anyone have any pictures?

I assume you mean a short hood since your talking about a 78. I still haven't decided what I am going to do with the reflector.

I think you mean a short hood. Long hoods gave way to the short hood in 74'. There are plenty of examples of RS tail lights on SCs. A search should turn up some examples.

I was able to find a good picture of one. IMO it doesn't look good unless the center section is color matched to the body. properly painted however, I think it looks HOT!!!

Who sells them?

No other single modification looks more ridiculous than these fake R tail lights on a long or short hood car.

I think that these violations of good taste are committed accidentally, because the perpetrators are unaware that, when it comes to styling a 911, you have to pick a theme: early rally car, RSR, stock and original, Ruf Yellowbird, etc. When you take your 911 and install R tail lights, Carrera side script, 18" twist rims, Ruf bumpers, and a whale tail, you have committed an offense against good taste. Sure, some of those individual parts are cool, but when you put them all together you end up with a catastrophe of mixed themes, a vertigo-inducing train wreck of historical artifacts, none of which complement eachother. You have, in other words, a 911 at war with itself, and we all know what Lincoln said: a house divided against itself cannot stand.

On the other hand what is considered as good taste is still an opinion. At the end of the day the only opinion that really matters about your car is your own.
If everyone liked exactly the same things it would be a pretty boring place IMHO.

a good 'mod' (to use current ricer punk terminology) is one that has a purpose; where form follows function. R lights had a purpose which was light weight. They look good on longhoods done right. If they lighten a shorthood then i say they are legitimate and acheive a purpose. you appreciate them for their function.

have to agree on the twist wheels though. i have never seen a bumper car w/ twists that looked good.

Hey, that's our race car. Other than the looks, the R lights and housings weigh in at less than 1 lb., the stock lights & housings are 5-7 lbs ea. I had them on our '73 targa street/track car. Then tried them on our '75 Carrera (RS look) race car. I went back to a stock housing (which I gutted) because they were too hard to see on the track. Whether someone likes them, "who cares!"

Noah - all good points. The key to modifications is balance and knowing when to quit. That's where some succeed and some fail. R lights are certainly functional for weight reduction, but they just don't fit the character of most 911's. It's like throwing a tubo tail on a narrow body car - it's trying too hard. Well modded cars look like they could have come from the factory. Badly modded/unbalanced cars look like they came from Lingleville.

While I like the looks of the stock lamp assemblies better than 'R' lamps the weight of the stock lamps is crazy.

I wish someone offered the stock lamp assemblies in fiberglass. I think Series900 makes them but I've emailed him once or twice about these and he's never replied.

What the heck is Lingleville. One of my favorite aspects of these cars is the personalization factor available to us all. I can usually tell from ten feet whether I'm gonna have anything in common with another owner. I relish the differences in personalities and style. Personally I'm a fan of purposeful understatement but that's just me............

Personally I think they look good on all models... but I'm biased. I sell them and have them in stock if you are interested.
