Progress has been made. The cam boxes and internals are back on. Everything went really smoothly. No cam timing had to be done, because we found out that everything was still in spec when we put on the dial indicator.

Marco, thank you very much for coming out early on your day off! It means a lot. While I don't think I could do everything myself yet, I have a pretty good idea of what we did.

The rest is down hill and the car should be on the road by Friday.

The cat came of with little resistance. I used a closed end 13 mm wrench and a 13 mm socket with breaker bar. Spraying a bunch of penetrant helped as well.

Chris, Scott, I thought we are going on Sunday?? That's what the thread shows. Saturday is my buffer/safety day for my car!

Anybody in the L.A. area wanna come out one of these evenings and help put the engine back in? It's much easier with at least two people.

sorry for not having responded earlier to your PM. Unfortunately, I have been very busy since I returned from Japan. I ripped my carpet out from my staircase and have started to work on putting wood down. It's a long overdue project. I am not even sure if I'll make it to the GAF next weekend since I migth have to take off for Korea...... Grrrr. Hope you get it all done.

When putting the engine back in the key is to be slow and to double-check many times that nothing is interfering when you join the two. For hookup just go through the list for what the engine/tranny packet needs to function. The most comon mess-up is the ground strap not being hooked up or tightened. Other than that it is pretty obvious if something is missing.

Good luck and maybe we'll meet at GAF depending on what is going on with my travel plans.

Thanks Ingo! I'm an expert on removing and installing the engine/tranny. I did it last year, twice within a week - yeah I've learned my lesson on reinstalling. I just find it easier with two people.

I hope things calm down for you and that you are able to make it to GAF!

Alright, engine is in, but still silent. I really should have made sure the the bung in the premuffler was the right size for the O2 sensor. Well, it's too small and I figured that out after Radu and I reinstalled the engine. Fortunately, we were able to get the premuffler back out with little problem. I will fix that little problem tomorrow and my 911 will be coming home tomorrow evening!!!

You did fine :) As for lifting the car, if we had a third person, I could have lifted the right side and the third adjusts the jack stands. I don't think we'd be so lucky after the engine was in.

I am sore and my left shoulder is really sore. Ever since messing up my right shoulder, I have become somewhat left handed.

That's cool, guys! So dave, what are you having done to fix your "bung hole" problem?

Bad news. Everything went together without a problem and the car fired right up. As Marco and I were warming up the car to check the oil level, all was fine. As I was leaving, the engine started to make a weird noise from the right chain box area. It is not the typical chains dragging over a trash can, but it sounds to me like the tensioner sprocket is hitting the box.

I will tear into the right box tomorrow (today) and see what is going on. I am disappointed and at the moment a bit pissed, but there is nothing I can do until things are opened up.

Since I can't turn my mind off, here are two theories...

1) The tensioner failed and the loose chain is smacking the areas circled in yellow and red.

2) Somehow, the tensioner hyper-extended and it is forcing the sprocket, circled in red, into the ledge.

Other options are that a nut or bolt loosened and is causing things to rattle, but it was getting louder as the engine ran longer and became hotter.

Only other thing I can think of, is that the tensioner is acting like a piston and jackhammering against the sprocket support.

I should add, that the noise went away during a bit of acceleration and on deceleration, but became louder as the engine warmed up.

Oh well, it's all speculation at this point, I'll see what happened tomorrow.

I will say that the euro premuffler added a nice sound.

I hope you checked the cam timing 3 times.

No metal in the oil. The engine is OK and that is a good thing.

I ordered two new tensioners and the related gaskets, nuts, washers, etc. My parents were kind enough to provide me with their Visa CC :). I don't trust the left tensioner and since I have to go through the cam timing steps again and have the muffler removed, I might as well replace them both.

Parts should be here mid week.
