What kind of wheels are these?

I just bought the car with these on. I was wandering if anyone has seen these before and if there is anything special about them?

Thanks
Andre

Very similar style to the BBS wheels. Check my website.

Nothing special at all. Popular aftermarket wheel on 1980's Toyota's, etc.

I had a set on my car for a long time, bought them new in the eighties.
I don’t think they’re that heavy, they’re a true all aluminum 3 piece, even the centers.
I took mine apart a few years ago to sandblast and paint the centers.
Black or silver centers would look better on your car.

Here’s a picture right after I got it back together from the paint shop.
I took the wheels apart myself and bead blasted them at a buddy’s house, the paint shop painted them with the same paint that they used on the car.
Don’t even dismount the tires, just let all of the air out, the wheel halves are sealed from the factory with silicon.
While they’re apart you can use a large flat file to clean up any scratches in the outer lip from rubbing on curbs, finish the edges off with fine sandpaper and Mothers brand mag polish,.
Re-torque the centers like you would a head, I did 3 steps ending at 45 foot lbs.
By the way, if you’re running any wheel spacers up front, they look a lot better if you replace the center caps with Porsche factory 3 prong caps, I don’t think they’ll clear on the front if your wheels are mounted without a spacer.
Mine looked like new when I was done, unfortunately I had to change them out for Kodiak Racing 3 piece 17” wheels when I upgraded to 993 brake calipers.
Good luck.

Sorry to get off topic, but............

Gary,

You say you torqued the bolts to 45 FOOT pounds? What size bolt are they? Even an M8 (and they look smaller than M8 by far) 12.9 property class socket head cap screw is typically torqued to around 30 ft-lbs. Most of the fasteners i've seen for wheels are either 10.9 or 12.9 and M7 or less in size.

http://www.metricmcc.com/catalog/Ch10/10-1027.pdf

See this topic for some confirming manufacturer information about their tightening torque specs

Reasssembly of 3 piece wheels

Nonetheless, that's a mean looking slantnose. I think they look best in all black even though i've never been a big fan of the slantnose.

Hi Kevin,

The bolts that come in those wheels (qty 20) are an M10 with rolled threads (not cut), typically a rolled thread bolt is a very high grade, these have no markings on them.
I don’t remember how I came up with 45 foot lbs., typically I get advice from “experts” when I’m doing something I’ve never done before so I’m guessing that someone told me that was the correct torque.

That picture of my car is 2+ years old, it looks even better now, it has a DP style extended tea tray wing with a 930S front valance and 17 x 9/11 Kodiak Racing black center wheels.

If you need help getting them apart, blasted, painted or anodized and then reassembled let me know. I am local and do this all the time.

We torque our 1/4 28 bolts to 14 lb/ft......... Although a 10mm fastener is a fair bit larger.

Cheers

what would you charge for all four painted black...but proper. I don't want it chipping in a couple years.

Contact me offline, or give me a call 604-313-3494. I would suggest anodizing the centers and I think you will be suprised!

Cheers

The black anodizing Jeff is talking about is really nice, that's what Kodiak used on my current wheels.

Gary, Shoot me a pic of your wheels! I do a large volume of wheels with Kodiak and every month and take care of the logistics on a fair bit of the anodizing. I would love to add your wheel pics to my database!

Cheers
