Heater smoking inside cabin

Sorry if this is already covered in another thread. Pulled over on the side of the road right now on my way to Texas from north Carolina because I started smelling something burning and then smoke started coming in the cabin from the heaters under the dash. I shut it off and pulled over immediately. Started the car up and drove to the next exit to get off the interstate and there is no smoke with the heater off. One additional detail is that my crank pulley seal is still leaking a bit of oil which the pulley then flings around the engine compartment, including the cooling fan where the heater sucks air in from. Maybe that got gunked up in my heater and started burning? Thoughts? It might be a cold rest of the 18 hrs..

Likely a shorted blower motor.
What year car? Footwell blowers?
Unplug the blower (s) and you still should have some heat.

+1

I have no motor blower or footwell blowers. With stock H/E's, would still have to turn the heat down/open the windows in traffic. That stuff is just for around town - shouldn't need it on the freeway - the big fan on the motor pushes a lot of air at anything over idle.

What does the smoke smell like? Oil? Electrical? Exhaust? If it's the latter, keep the windows open, either of the first two, just disable the blowers....

He is off on the road and disconnected the foot blowers, all is good plus heat not smoke.

I have a foul odor that I think is coming from the blower motor in the engine compartment. How do you disconnect that motor?

It smelled electrical. My footwell blowers are good. The one in the engine bay is the one that fried.

Oh damn, that's too bad, well, you can go the cheap route and put a real cheap "Grainger" motor will work but maybe not all the levels on the foot blowers or buy a replacement from our host.

I did both routes and found in the end needed all levels to work properly
