Wiring for the license plate light???

I had both working when I purchased the car 3 1/2 years ago. Now my right light will not turn on. I thought it was the light fixture, which was corroded, I replaced it with an almost new one. It will not light up. Does any one know how it wires up ?? Is it connected to the rear parking lights? Help !!

I can't confirm the wiring for an 84, but in earlier cars the license lights are fused separately (typically fuse 7 in box II) but they turn on with the light switch, beginning with the parking light stop and also the headlight stop. If your left light works, try checking if you have current to the wire to the right light. If there is no power, there might be a break or disconnect somewhere in the wiring, and you may be able to trace back to the problem.

I had the same problem with one of my plate lights. Check where the wires pass from the engine compartment to the fender well beneath the car. There is some kind of connector with pins to pass the wires instead of just a hole with the wires going through.
Mine was loose and just needed to be pushed tighter together and now they are fine. If one side lights but not the other that could be it.

License Lights

Peter,

Do you have both left & right license plate lights not working or just one side? If you have just one side not working, then your problem is easy to fix. It is a loose connection at the last connector. If both, check the fuse first. Hope this helps.

I just re-wired my license plate lights last week. It picks up power from the tailight housing.
