Engine Swap Questions
Alright guys... Let me cut to the nitty gritty...
I have a 71 Targa w/ a recent top end rebuild on a 2.4 and and some new parts in the 915 gearbox. The tranny works as good as any other OE 915 and the engine has an oil leak.. However the new rings and linings of the cylinders all look good and it Runs Fabulous.. other than the oil leak.. (right on the exhaust .. of course) Then engine feels Very solid up to speed and has good compression.. The webers are in pretty dependable shape and work well as well in delivering the power. Overall it runs Very well, but not good enough as a Daily drive ONLY due to the Oil leaking b/n the Case and Cylinders... Heres what Im thinking.. Choices. Tear down the engine install all new gaskets on the top end, and hope that the oil leaks are COMPLETELY gone, therefor allowing me to use the car as my DRIVER> .. COST Approximately $400 or LESS Then install my AC system........ the Car MUST HAVE some sort of AC !!!!!!! OPTION 2 Search for an Engine UPGRade. and Sell my current motor w/ Webers to front some of the money of course. What would be a reasonable amount to get on the MOTOR and WEBERS?? Photo Attached.. Engine is VERY Clean and Presentable .. about 1k miles since Rebuild.. Runs GREAT! New Rings, gaskets, valve stems/ valve seats, Honed Cylinders, ... RSR seals, Exhaust Studs professionally fixed, ... What are the Easier Engine Swaps if I use my 915 gearbox HOw much extra work is it to get a g50 in the car? Whats the BEST / most economical/ powerful/ bang for the bug Engine SWAP ? Should I also Do a Tranny Swap? Best place to get Engines? More questions to come.. Lets Get the Ball rolling.. Thanks in ADVANCE.. Keep in mind >> ON A BUDGET ! What're your Recommendations ?Fix it or Swap it? ![]() ![]()

With your engine you know what you have. If you bought a 3.0 or 3.2 I think you are looking at a much bigger investment. Engine swaps are doable but systems need to be upgraded (fuel, oil cooling, wiring, ignition, etc).
I put a 3.0 into a 69 E. Great project but not inexpensive. ![]()

I believe your car originally had a 2.2, so it's already had one upgrade. I agree with Chuck, on a budget, you are better sticking with something you know the history on. Fix your oil leaks and have fun with it.
