Carrera Headlight Upgrade

Hey folks,

When I had my SC, I did a very labor-intensive H4 conversion, thinking I was being commendably thorough as indeed I was...

My H4 Project (Long w\ pics)

I was well pleased with the result, but how many times can you go through that? With my Carrera, I just wanted a simpler solution; and so decided to see what I could do as far as improving the existing H5's. Relays and higher wattage bulbs were an obvious start, so I began with that. I would use the same basic design as with my SC:

I grabbed a relay kit from Marcus Sucro and ordered a couple of 80\100 H5 bulbs from our host. The Sucro kit is very good, but after examining the default wire layout, I decided to rewire it. So much for convenience... I did this because I wanted to use thicker cabling than Marcus provides, and because in keeping with the above drawing, I wanted to use one relay for H and one for L. The result:

I used a permanent blk magic marker to stripe the H and L relay connections (86) to differentiate them from the power cables (87) since they are the same color but smaller. At right is a 30A circuit breaker from www.waytekwire.com to be installed inline from the battery.

Here is the result:

All ends are tinned and all connections soldered and heat-shrinked. Wiring should last awhile, so let's see if the stock plastic bulb connectors can handle the heat...

Very nice. Did you upgrade the wires to the headlights also? If so, what gauge and how do you recommend doing this?
I've got the Sucro relay installed, but not sure how/which wires to upgrade

thanks

I did not do that this time as it is a helluva lot of work. I did do it on my SC however. Check out the link in my first post in this thread for more info,

Good stuff, Ianc, remember this thread?

There's plenty out there to keep the Carrera guys busy looking for candlepower.

I do remember that thread; it was a very interesting one with plenty of lively discussion.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen too many like that lately...
