Chevy Oil Cooler. And other Cooler questions?

My external (wheel well) oil cooler is leaking badly. I need to make a move. My choice is to A) fix it by taking it to a rad shop for a plug job and getting new lines or b) replace with new OEM or other make oil cooler. ($1000+)

My younger brother just rigged a Chevy s10 trans oil cooler for his engine oil on his nissan skyline (he's one of those drifting types). Its got lots of surface and hemounted behind his twin rad fans. Seems to work well and it was 60 bucks. I have read on here that others have used RX7 coolers with some success.

My questions are:

1. is it smart to mix and match?
2. Has anyone actually fixed one of these without spending a fortune?

Any comments?

b.

one thing to take into account is that the oil lines on a 911 are huge compared to any water cooled car.

Mocal is great stuff and pricing is comparable to other brands but I think Fronnzy was looking to save some money.

Well yes, saving money is one element. If I can make it work, and well. I decided the chevy part is not for me, even if I can get it dialed in with the lines etc. I want porsche ready, or porsche OEM parts.

The save money option is a fix. Can it be done, or once they are gone is that it?

Are you sure that it's the cooler that's leaking and not just the lines? If one of the lines was failing near the cooler it could create a drip that looks like it's coming from the cooler.

If it is the cooler that's leaking, look for the Elephant Racing widemouth cooler. It sells for about $450 and I think Pelican carries it.

That's a good point. I can't tell. I have to clean up the whole thing this week. It is caked with oil and road grime an 1/8th of an inch thick. I just assumed. Keep ya posted.

Thanks for the info.

What is the best way to clean that - watered down simple green or maybe the New HD Simple Green that they are now selling at Home Depot (supposed to be Al friendly)?

Thanks

I used an RX7 Cooler mounted in front spoiler on my 2.7S - no probs at all and good fit. I ran new larger lines from the engine to cooler. From memory I had to change one fitting on the cooler to make it fit. (few years ago now)
