Just got my 79SC back from smog and .......

hi all,
Just got my 79SC back from smog and the guy didn't pass it because he thinks the car has been tampered. He noticed the air pump and egr missing, but the numbers were good enough to pass. How difficult is it to put in an air pump and egr valve? Does anyone know if a 79SC have an EGR valve?
Thanks.

Sorry I can not be of more help, but if you are in need of a pump, injectors and plumbing; Let me know as I have a set for sale.
Good Luck

You can install an airpump and belt pretty easily. I put one on for my smog event and it was not even functional, just spinning around. You need to have a bracket to install the airpump. Pretty easy to find.

Good luck!

Yes, 78-79 require the EGR and pump. As for installation, not all that easy with the engine in the car. At a minimum, the HE's will need to be removed to fit the injectors.
I'd try a different test station. Some are less curious than others, and you may get away with just fitting the pump (easy 5 min. procedure). Are you running SSI's?

It sounded to me like you just needed to pass the show and tell portion of the test. I mounted the bracket and installed the pump and belt in a matter of 30 min. to an hour. The pump was just for looks and I passed my inspection. Worth a try if you car is running clean.

Just my .02

If you have a cat and a single inlet muffler, then no.

Somehow I answered and it wound up on your other thread. Oh well, the advice here is on the money--the bottom line is if you have the parts. If they are still on the car except the ones noted by the tech, then it's a fairly easy job. If you need the whole system, just a bigger PITA.

Where are you in the bay area? I have all of the parts you will need to get through it.

What a tool. That's a shop I wouldn't bother going to again.

Tip on passing visuals - go to the seediest looking shop you can find. Also show up right before closing time. Especially on a Friday. I used to do that with my "modified" 944s and they never even bothered with a visual. As long as nothing was obviously wrong/out of place, I doubt it ever would have been an issue.

I would go to a "Test Only" station rather than a "Full Service Smog Station" as i have found them to just warm up the car hook up their testing system to the exhaust and give you a pass or fail paper. And yes to agree with Porsche-O-Phile this was a seedy looking shop with about 6 others next to it for exhaust, suspension, electrical, etc. Once a guy even asked, "did you get a letter from DMV?" i just said, "yah but i didnt bring it. " Got my passing paper... woohoo!

Does anyone know of a shop in the Bay Area that is willing to do it with the other eye closed?
I rather do that than install the parts if possible. Any connections to a smog only center out there?

I thought our cut off year was 1973 here in CA?

I don't know where in the "Bay Area" you live, but I am in King City and have a pump, plumbing, etc. off my Euro 1981 SC, that you could borrow, as I don't need it right now with my engine torn apart. Just a thought. I would also do a search or start a post that asks for a recommendation of a "good" smog shop in the bay area that won't waste your time. There are too many people from the bay here to not know of one. These kinds of things can usually be taken care of in Alameda or Oakland if you catch my drift. $$

What if you told him the engine is out of a US 81 SC? They use an oxygen sensor instead of a smog pump and air injection system. Of course the lambda (oxygens sensor) might not be there. It all depends how much about Porsche the mechanic knows. Good Luck, keep us posted and let us know where you find success.

That's a good idea. Should start a new thread on where the good shops are.

The current cut off for smog check is the 1975 model year and earlier.

If he indicates a newer motor in the car, he will need a certificate/sticker from CARB saying the installation was approved/inspected. Don't do it. Slap on the "faux" air pump and be done with it.
