As for the comparison with the 930, I would say it feels just as fast, but without the lag (and boost always on!). I'm not surprised about this though as the bhp figures are about the same (the 3.6 is a varioram with mapped ECU so should be good for just over 300bhp) and the car only weighs about 1020kg. Definitely worth the cost/hassle. My 3.2 engine performed great (247bhp) but had 100,000 miles and would probably have needed attention in the next couple of years or so. I now have a modern robust engine with only 25,000 on it so should be able to put rebuilds out of my mind! Quote:

Tim you have 11 days to get the 1000 miles on it, thats only 110 a day - sort it out. |
Awesome!
Yeah, your motor with just 25K miles on should definately proove very reliable long term. I think this engine swap is an excellent idea if you want more performance and have an idea of the provenance of your new engine - seems less risky than buying an unknown 930 I would have thought. And the car is light with no turbo lag to boot. This is something I would defiantely like to aspire to if I ever have the dosh to do it. I've just got a pair of SSI's and M&K to fit in the meantime - gunna enjoy that for a while first. Just out of interest, if you don't mind me asking, why did you sell your 930? I think I remember a thread in which you bought it, but now I see it is sold. |
I cant wait to burn some rubber with you when the "Ark" finally gets here :)

I don't regret selling it at all, I've had so much more fun with my Carrera :D |

Fantastic job, well done Tim.

Just out of curiosity, did you repaint after you removed the rocker covers?
|
Did Patrick pay for the new parts?
|
Muffler
I am in the final stages of my conversion.
What type of muffler did you use? Sounds great and is the back pressure an issue that you thought of while creating your system. I would like a single out (boxster) style with an extremely loud pipe. My neighbors will love me forever, just like my Harley neighbor has for years.. Cheers, MM |
Hi MM!
Muffler is a Happy Crab 2 from timmins. Fellow Pelican Jevvy loaned it to me, and I don't want to give it back ;) Cheers, Tim. |

+1 on Patrick Motorsport, did they ever answer your email about the clutch? |
The clutch was returned to Patrick Motorsport who sent it back to Centerforce for inspection. Apparently no faults were found. PM refunded the price of the clutch plus $300 or so.

Another update :)
I booked a session with Wayne Schofield (one of the top ECU tuning guys in the UK), Went up last Friday afternoon, Wayne got to work straight away: http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...20(Medium).jpg Emulator box (£3K's worth :o) hooked into the ECU (This is the interface between the ECU and laptop): http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...20(Medium).jpg Laptop hooked up to the Emulator: http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...20(Medium).jpg Before he started the re-map, he checked the existing chip from my ECU. When I bought the engine / ecu I was told that it had been chipped already, Wayne compared the code on that chip to the code from a bog standard one. Turns out the chip that was in there was running a standard Porsche ECU map! Apparently this is quite common :o Next he checked the ignition and found that 2 spark plug leads were swapped over. In a normal 6 plugged car this would be apparent straight away, but not in the twin plugged 3.6, again he said this is very common because the leads look right in the swapped positions. Then he checked the vacuum systems, these were all in order, with no leaks. So he started the remapping process and spent nearly 2 hours in front of the laptop watching various graphs & hexadecimal codes flying about on the screen. So results are: http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...20(Medium).jpg http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...20(Medium).jpg Yes, that's 325.6 bhp and 289.1lbft torque!! As you can imagine I was over the moon with that :) Wayne wasn't that surprised, he was expecting around that sort of figure for a healthy 3.6 varioram with free flowing exhaust. The car is running brilliantly, much more drivable, increase in power is very evident, the way it pulls in 5th on the motorway is just great :D MPG was also great, 260 miles on the way home and used half a tank, this works out at about 29mpg! |
Wow, those are some great numbers! Must be a lot of fun to drive it:D
|
those are great numbers.

I am defenitley doing the conversion in my 74 wide body, did you bolt upto a 915 or a g50?
I have an 85 915 being rebuilt for high HP motor. Matt |
Hi Matt, I used the original 915 from my '84. Had it rebuilt, seems to be holding up well so far ;)
Good luck with your conversion! |
AirCooledExcellence
Yeah I'm going to put in new2 syncros and a wevo bearing retainer in the 915 that should hold up OK. I have a 74 which I have just done a wide body on, from a narrow body with 8 & 10 inch fuchs make a real diff in the handling dept. a thread with some pics of my car So the plan is 3.6 (if I can get a Vram i will) otherwise a 964 and then goto 3.8 with either EFI or 50mm PMOs G80 cams and je pistons with some nice extractors and exhast should get 350+ hp out of that. what are the major tasks in doing the conversion, I hear the fuse box needs to be moved, any other anoying stuff like that required? If you don't mind me quizzing you for time to time, if that is OK? cheers Matt |
This is just great!!!
This makes me want a P-car project all the more... |
Matt,
Not sure about the fuse box needing to be moved??? I certainly didn't have to do that. No major tasks to do any of it really, just get hold of the various components such as the wiring loom adapter & flywheel (got mine from Patrick motorsports) and chuck them all in ;) Plenty of threads on here with loads of information. |

Thanx.... Hope i can fire it up within a couple of days now:) Wiring is almost done, fuel lines done, oil lines soon to be hooked up....
|
Exciting times! Hope it all goes well, good luck :D

Any of you 3.6 installers have check engine lights installed? I need info to ad one on a 1990 3.6 installed in my 1980 SC to help me sort out a cutting out problem. Thanks John
