This Autumn's Project - 3.6 Conversion - **Completed**
Picked this little beauty up at the weekend:
http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...993Engine1.jpg It's a 97 Varioram, with 28k Miles. It came with the ECU (re-mapped) and Engine Loom. Previous owner estimates it's good for around 310hp :D So once I've removed my 3.2 it'll be full systems go to get this running in my car: http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP.../DSC_02541.JPG This is the biggest project I've ever taken on before and I'm really looking forward to tackling it! I think that I may have a few questions along the way though ;) |
keep us posted, I always have an eye out looking for a 3.6 non_vario(I like things simple) and I'm interested in how much of a hassle it might be to do the swap

Nice car but the steering wheel is on the wrong side! :)

That is a nice looking engine. I've done four 3.6 conversions, three in 911s and one in a 914. Here is a picture of my car (red car) with a 92 964 engine and the Varioram I installed in a 74 RS (real one). I've got quite a few notes so when you do the project, e-mail me with questions. I don't read these posts on a regular basis. The only real problem I had with the Varioram was that the engine wouldn't start. I sent the ECU (55 pin Euro) and igniter out to a person who claims to be the "expert" on 3.6 conversion. The ECU came back as "defective" and my igniter was missing. After getting a new ECU and many hours of testing, I gave up. The owner took to car to an electronic wizard and after many more hours, they discovered that the crank sensor had been messed up and the two wires had been swapped. It was extremely frustrating. I hope you can trust the person who modified your ECU to make sure the lock block is totally disabled! Good luck with the project

You are going to like the varioram , let me know if you need help.
|
subscribed aswell..
|
Thanks for the offers of help guys, I may well need it ;)
Hopefully I won't have too many issues, I have no air injection or drive block to worry about on my engine/ecu so that's a good start. I'll be pulling all the unnecessary stuff off the engine over the weekend and will report back afterwards! |

Subscribed though I think he will fly through this install no worries, right little toolmeister our Ace ;)
I'll give you £1200 for the 3.2 Acey boy LOL |
Are you planning an additional oil cooler?
Carrera in fender or somewhere under the front bumper? Good luck with the project... you'll love the V-ram! |
Another oil cooler is definitely in your future.
|
Don't forget I live in the freezing UK, so might get away with it ;)
I already have a late model Carrera cooler and will add an electric fan, I'll see how I go with that. |
Do you know which company you are going to get your swap parts from? I am curious what you are going to use for exhaust.

My mate Jevvy has loaned me his old 'happy crab' muffler to get me going. Will probably sort out an M&K eventually. Quick update! Over the weekend I stripped the engine of all the bits and pieces I don't need, i.e. Heater blower, air box, power steering pully etc... http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...993Engine4.jpg http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...993Engine5.jpg I also have some questions on the Varioram system: There are a couple of vacuum pipes that are open ended, one is a small 3mm bore, the other looks like 6mm: http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...993Engine7.jpg http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...993Engine8.jpg I'm missing the vacuum canister so I'm guessing these two might be plumbed into it, can anyone confirm this for me? I also need to know the part number for the vacuum canister. |
here are the vacuum schmatics for the vram
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1189433514.gif http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1189433534.gif PS If you are interested in selling the airfilter assembly I am interested, price of course is a concern |
Thanks for that Bill, I reckon the small open hose is for the heater valve (so that can be plugged), the other one must be for the vacuum reservoir, does this sound right?
Any idea which part code I need to order for the reservoir, I don't think I need a stock one, is there an RS version or smaller one? I'll let you know on the airbox Bill ;) |

wrt vacuum res., the 993vram res is in the body, for a t/p use a 964/993 non vram res. like this http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1189436611.jpg and a close up of the connection tower http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1189436678.jpg |
'95 vac res
993.110.140.02 |
Nice one, thanks Bill :)
|
There's no stopping you Tim :D
Good luck with the install. |
Hey Rich, where have you been lately?
|
Exactly what I did, the top connection goes to the brake booster if you have one...the throttle cable that fellow pelican DS DW recommends is much better than the Timmins kit one. Here is the link http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/308212-how-convert-throttle-linkage-3-6-transplants.html?highlight=throttle+cable
|
Wow already making good progress. I am jealous. I looked at the Timmons exhaust they have some nice concepts. The 3/4" headers with heater tin welded around to allow for cats or cat bypass. Very nice idea. I wonder if those with cats would pass Ca. smog referee inspection.
|
You can take the power steering bracket and simply cut out the 3 bolt area that seals the cam. I did that on my install way back in the mid 1990's before Timmins had kits / pieces available.
Also, I found the cruise control cable worked perfectly as a throttle cable with simple modifications to one (bell housing) end. Never had any issues with these modified pieces. Tinker |

Taking care of a two year and a four year old! Between them and work not much free time these days :( Your car is looking great.:) |
Had a nice little delivery from Patrick Motorsport this afternoon:
http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...93Engine15.jpg Looks like nice quality kit! I've sold my 3.2 so will be dropping that out over the weekend. Once that's done the gearbox is being shipped off for a rebuild (MB Engineering in Cumbria, UK is doing it). Things are moving along nicely :D |

Nice project. Good luck!!

OK, Dropped the engine today, my first time! I followed the Bentley manual and everything went without a hitch. Took about 3 leisurely hours.
Some pics: http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...ngineDrop1.jpg http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...ngineDrop2.jpg http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...ngineDrop3.jpg http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...ngineDrop4.jpg The engines off to it's new owner next weekend, destined for a 72 car :D Anyway, I'm pleased with todays progress! Another step closer to 3.6 power ;) |
Good work Tim!
Looking forward to getting a PAX lap in this at a track day next year mate ;-) |
good effort mate - that 3.6 is never gona fit!
|
go for it Ace ! :)

Still moving forward with this (albeit slowly!), and have a couple of questions for the 3.6 swap experts!
The wiring harness that I got with the engine has one of the sockets removed leaving me with 3 wires to connect to something! http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...93Engine24.jpg After some investigation I believe this to be the flywheel sensor connection (the white one is head temp, the green is knock). What I don't know is how to connect this up to the flywheel sensor! The sensor has a plug with 3 connections numbered 1-3, I need to know which colour wire goes where. Looking at the connection to the knock sensor, white=1, brown=2, 3=black http://www.zen78885.zen.co.uk/ForumP...93Engine25.jpg Is it safe to assume the Flywheel sensor is the same? Does anyone know for sure? One other query, I'm planning on doing the engine tin modifications over the weekend. Does anyone have detailed information on how to do this? Some close-up pics would be great as well ;) Thanks! |
See if this helps

Does anyone know if you can buy the plugs separately from the loom? |
I think NCA means no color assigned, all the NCA's go to a central chassis ground
