New 911SC owner, with a question
Hey everyone,
I just purchased a 1980 911 SC Targa. I had a PPI done that came out good. The oil level gauge does not work and i know it can be either the sending unit or the gauge. My question is when i go to check the oil level at with the dipstick the car dies. I know i am suppose to let the car idle and have it on a flat surface. Any idea why it does when i open up the oil cap? Thank is advance Mark |

Welcome! Make sure you post pics of your "new" car quick, or the picture police will get after you. You bought the right era of 911...

First question for me (disclaimer: and I am in no way an expert)
what is your idle speed before you remove cap? It should be around 950 +/-

Welcome Mark !
There are a few plausible possibilities of which a vacuum leak is one. I am no expert of neither, but please do a search. This problem has been covered multiple times.

What rpm is the car idling at with the cap on?
Check these links: Check oil, engine dies? Oil cap removal and engine stalls When checking oil level...

it is around 1k +/-, i may just be getting impatient with the warm up. Should an ideal time to check be after the car has been driven? I usually perform all maintenance checks (fluids, etc.) before i drive the car .

The car has to be at temp to check the oil level.
I think this means there is some type of vacuum issue, i.e. some vacuum hose is leaking.

Oil needs to be "decent drive around the neighborhood" warm from what I understand. FWIW, my car does not seem to stall regardless of warm or not... at least not that I have ever noticed. I think the engine warm is just to circulate the oil thoroughly before checking the level, and probably does not matter for your problem. But again, more people here that no a LOT more than I/.
Good luck!

For an accurate reading of the oil level the engine has to reach operational temps. My Carrera will take at least 10-15 minutes to get hot enough. If it is cooler it will read 'false' low on the stick (and the gauge). The obvious problem with that is that you will conclude the oil level is too low and add more oil than necessary, resulting in overfilling.

911SC520,
Ideally, your 911 SC idle should change once you remove the filler cap; however, your engine should not die. There is a brass restrictor in the rubber oil line that should be in place. If not present, that could be your problem. I will look up the part information and post it shortly.

911SC520,
I looked at the Porsche catalog and found the part but it says it is for the 81 models and up??? Anywhat the part number is 930-107-289-00 and here is the Pelican Parts Diagram of the same component (part 10A). Maybe some 80 SC owners will chime up with some input. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/PartsLookup/search.cgi?command=show_page&Catalog_Name=911_USA_78_83_KATALOG&Illustration=104-00&Line_Item=10

To accurately check the oil, the temp gauge needs to be between 1/3 to 1/2 way up the gauge. You get an incorrect reading if it's not that hot.
So, w/ a 911, you can't check the oil before you go for a drive. |

you are missing a restrictor in the oil line coming off the filler neck. (or it is skewed) no biggie.
