Info Request: two small oil coolers in / behind fog light area in Carrera valence?

Hello everyone,

Has anyone ever mounted two small oil coolers, maybe two 19 row or smaller ones, in the fog light area of a Carrera lower front valence? My 74 T with a Euro 3.2 does not have a front cooler and instead of going with a 19 or 44 row front mounted fender cooler, I was thinking of trying this config instead. I do not have fogs mounted and it would be great if I could use or modify the existing fog light brackets in the valence.

Please let me know if you have done this and what coolers you used. I would also like to at least one high CFM pull electric fan on the cooler for traffic conditions.

BTW, the valence looks like this one (again, without the fog lights) and has the fog light brackets somewhat recessed in the fog light area:

TIA,

Scott

Maybe something like this?

Or should I just stick with the MOCKITBPLUS racerpartswholesale.com sells?

Again, TIA,

Scott

If you wish to retain the stock appearance of the car I would put on an oem style radiator in the passenger front wheel well. Elephant has a nice kit w/ all parts to do this.

If stock appearance isn't important a center mount is by far the most efficient

Another alterntive is twin sidewinders ala 964/993, buy that entails a lot more fabrication

Mocal (actually a Setrab) I fabbed up the shroud and SPAL fan. It's in the fenderwall. Bought the cooler and fan on EBay, less than $90. Gives a 24F temperature drop. The original Mocal leaked (yes, I tried JB Weld on it, to no avail).

I think I like the advice so far. The plumbing to 2 coolers is gonna get complicated. Don't out think a good system like the fender device.

(This coming from me, the original tinkerer )

The factory got it right with the Carrera cooler, and I know several people who have tried smaller aftermarket coolers and regretted it because the setup just did not provide enough cooling. However, if your T still has the passenger side battery box you're going to need to do some significant fabrication work to make room.

On the subject of fitting 2 coolers behind the fog light openings, there really isn't much room up there.

Milt, what would be adding complexity to a twin cooler setup in series? Would there be enough oil pressure to get oil through both coolers with stainless braided hose in between them? Either way, I plan on hooking up at least one of the coolers and since I have two holes in the valence with no fog lights, I may just keep the other cooler in to balance out the looks. Opinions? Concerns?

TIA,

Scott

You won't fit those 2 small cooler (or even 1) behind the stock valence. There just isn't room.

The factory type carrera cooler can't be beat if you want a fender mount solution. It's made to fit and as big as you are going to get into the fender, the factory stone guard seals to the underside of the fender, and you'll have a clean OEM type solution that clearly adds to the resale value of your car.

The mocal doesn't include a stone guard, and from the pictures it doesn't even have rubber isolators. and it's smaller.

We have added secondary coolers for years to the left fender of the 911. The factory 911R was the inspiration for it. Clients were asking for more cooling capacity for their turbos and track cars. It requires patience and some time to get the parts to fit right.
74- up; When going with almost any left fender cooler you lose the water bottle and vapor recovery tank. So the vapor tank can be located elsewhere and a smaller aftermarket washer tank. 73- earlier: Same for the vapor tank and you may want to think about cutting out battery boxes for maximum efficiency. As most of these cars are modded anyway, relegating a small battery to the smugglers box or in front of the spare is indicated.
The oe carrera cooler in the passenger side is excellent and we run it in series with a setrab 150 on the driver side. Rock shield guard, screen, mounts, hoses and fittings all need to be considered when installing these.
On pure race cars (such as a swb vintage 911 or C2 "RSR") we routed the hoses thru the trunk for extra protection

On two of our slant nosed n/a powered client cars, they did not want to run a center oil cooler set up, so used on one of them; 2) 19 row units behind the carrera (84-89) valence. On the other (which we liked better) one 944 turbo cooler per side with blow thru marine supply 3" 12 v fans

The 944 turbo oil coolers are compact well engineered small coolers, about the side of 2 bricks. Capacity? Consider this; the 944 T is a 2.5 turbocharged motor (albeit watercooled) and does very well with one. Double them up and you arguably have 5 liter watercooled motor capacity, so air cooled 3.4 or smaller should be just fine
