Quick K&N question

I just replaced the K&N cone filter set up on my 87 3.2L to the stock air box.
I am using a K&N filter also in my air box. The car ran fine prior to the swap, but now the idle is a bit rough. I have checked for all vacuum leaks and am confident I have gone over everything. When I place my hand over the air box opening however, the idle smooths out. ???? So, could this mean the K&N needs more oil applied? It had been sitting in box for 5 or 6 years prior to me using it.

Hopping this is a simple fix...

If it is a hot wire system, do be careful with the K&N oil. If you get oil on the hot wire from over-oiling your filter and running the car, it can ruin the MAF sensor.
