peeling back the porsche mystique
it has been said that only the french and kids who have the parental economic advantage pronounce porsche with two syllables. this maybe true. as a auto-mortgage payer and lone wrench i can attest its pronounced with one. unless your underneath it, the its multiples. as far as the mystique. whilst replacing the master cylinder. the first order of business is to get out the turkey baster. roger

As a person who has seen videos of Ferry pronouncing his own name and countless television ads from the company, I can attest to the fact that it is pronounced with two syllables, no matter what country or position you are in!

I have never understood why there is a question on how to pronounce it. It is a family's name and the family pronounces it with 2 syllables.

+3 from another Kraut
Colorful Metaphors and Expletives may be added as needed whilst attempting to repair it. My wife has figured out the mystique. The car is in a constant process of being completely rebuilt, as 1/2 the car has to be disassembled to get to any single item (a recursive process that causes computers in sci-fi movies to explode). Therefore, the "car" lasts forever. The owners bank account is less fortunate.

Fun I should read this as I am in the process of removing the:
- front carpeting, - cardborad shield - fresh air blower assembly (vent cover, blower assembly, air hose clamps, air hoses) to get to the foglight switch.

I can tell you that I pronounced “Porsche” with about a dozen syllables while I was removing the door panel, disconnection all the door wiring (mirror, two window switches and speakers) and completely removing the door just to …
. . . . . . . . replace the f---ing antenna!

It depends, if you want to pretend like you are German and have a German accent then say it with the eh ending sound if it makes you feel refined.
Or if you say it with a proper American English accent then no ending. Why does this keep coming up.....? Consider this...How do Americans and English pronounce BMW? We don't say Bawarian Moter Verks (BMV).

Oh yes, this post reminds me of this old joke:
************************************************** ********** In Europe, a commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English". In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away. By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru. Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

Horst: [threatingly] We Germans aren't all smiles und sunshine.
Burns: [recoils in mock horror] Oooh, the Germans are mad at me. I'm so scared! Oooh, the Germans! [hiding behind Smithers] Uh oh, the Germans are going to get me! Horst: Stop it! Man 2: Stop, sir. Burns: Don't let the Germans come after me. Oh no, the Germans are coming after me. Man 2: Please stop the `pretending you are scared' game, please. Horst: Stop it! Stop it! Burns: [brief pause, then resumes] No! They're so big and strong! Man 2: Stop it. Horst: Stop it, Mr. Burns. Man 2: Please stop pretending you are scared of us, please, now. Burns: Oh, protect me from the Germans! The Germans... Horst: Burns, STOP IT!

snbush67,
I don't understand what you mean by a "proper American English accent" or why it applies here. We are talking about pronouncing another person's name accurately. American English accents vary by region, and they apply to many words, but not to someone's name. Your BMW example is not correct. Here we are pronouncing the English names of 3 English letters which are the initials of the company's title, not pronouncing the name of the company.

I was in France in '85 during LeMans when Porsche took the top ? positions, and on the radio when they were announcing the results, it was Poush, poush, poush, etc. Kind of like a french accent of 'porsh' where the r gets dropped. One syllable only, but it was cool to hear them repeating all of the top positions like that.

If the French say it with one syllable than that answers the question and we can now move on.
We now know it is pronounced Por-sha. ![]()
