Royal Hyper Black Rota Fox

After many months of waiting I finally received my order for four Rota Fox wheels in Royal Hyper Black. My first impression is they look great. I like the color even better in person then in the pictures. Of course my pictures in my garage at night don't do them justice at all.

But then my wife noticed a ding on the inside lip on one of the 7.5" wheels.

So I check them all out, and I find another ding on the outside lip on the other 7.5" wheel.

So I called Subydude up, hoping they won't give me grief. They don't give me any hassle at all, and offer to ship me replacement wheels free of charge as soon as they get their next shipment of Royal Hyper Black. Unfortunately that won't be until the end of October.

So I am bummed that the wheels are damaged, but I am still a happy customer. Subydude did the best they could with an unfortunate situation. Thanks, Subydude!

That's a shame about the dings -- but it's good customer service.

I'd think you could do a little grinding and run those until the replacements arrive?

Is that a nick, or a void? ..it appears fairly smooth. (like a casting void)

Otherwise, very pretty wheel. Nice finish for so little coin.

Now that's very scary talk!

Pretty, pretty - I was a mean little bastard in jr. high; pliers holding quarter against buffing wheel against strict orders from Mr. Stuart, the shop teacher, not to do that. 25 cent shine, pretty, pretty (cheap). "Here, here! Give me that!", complied, dropping hot, hot, pretty, shiny quarter into Mr. Stuart's palm.

So now have grown to be big bastard still trying to reform, to render the past null & void - OH! That scary word again! Think of the possible invisible voids!

Most amazing - How on earth did TWO blatant flaws get by the legendary inspection/quality control at Rota?!!

Could something be amiss, or do we still have a hit?

HAHAHA!! All in such good fun!!

Looks like it was dropped. If it was a casting void wouldn't it have paint in the void as well? how were they shipped? In individual boxes or were they shipped 2 to a box?

Anyway, they look very nice and the price was right.

I'd check out the boxes they came in to see if there is any damage to them as well....those dings show that the wheels took a pretty good hit and just on one side of the rim....Were they well packed, inner box(es) inside an outer shipping carton? The pics which are a bit blurry are kinda hard to distinguish between a dent or a chip, either one could come from a hard hit....IMO

Oooh, those look very nice. Might have to get a set for my Targa (metallic burgandy with blackouts and black interior). Do they sell matching center caps and lugs in the hyper black?

TIA,

Scott

That was my thought too. ...for the first picture. The second flawed wheel (on the bright edge) looks like a bubble.

Maybe one is a chip, and one a void, or both chips. --I don't know. (curious tho')

I agree on being dropped. I think they must have been fine coming off the production line. The front face was covered in plastic wrap, and then some kind of very thin cloth cover over that. The ding on the front lip tore a hole in the plastic wrap. But there was no damage to the boxes they were shipped in. So my guess is the guys who pack the wheels in boxes dropped them.

The wheels were packed in individual boxes, but then two boxes were taped together with the faces of the wheels facing each other.

I am not going to run them. The main reason is I am a cheap SOB, and I don't want to pay for mounting and balancing twice. But also they don't have the hyper black center caps yet. Those are apparently on a slow boat right now. I've waited this long, and another 6 weeks isn't going to matter too much.

It sounds more like they had passed QC, got wrapped, THEN got bumped.

Maybe a forklift or other heavy transport machine whack? Things happen like this. When there are reoccurring problems that are not addressed and corrected in the process then it is time to get concerned.

EdT82SC,

How much was it for the rims in Hyper Black plus the matching center caps? Are they going to do the lug nuts also in Hyper Black? If not, did you stay with your black ones? If so, how much were those?

Thanks,

Scott

I'm not going to quote prices because the price I paid is no longer available. Go ask subydude for pricing. The wheels are on the web site. Center caps will be available in various colors. My understanding is they will be available in a few weeks, and pricing will be set then. I have no idea about lug nuts. Call and ask. I was planning on stripping my old black ones, and clear coating them. Pelican has new OEM black ones for sale if you want to go that way.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm still having a hard time figuring out how a little chip can be knocked off the rim like that. (2 times to boot!)

I imagine that most reading this WANT those flaws to be something other than a casting quality issue .. .but, I've got to say; now is a good time to really get to the bottom of what those pits are.

Other than the casting being very brittle (more so than a typical cast aluminum wheel) all I can think of is it looks somewhat like the pit from an electrical arc. ...?maybe?

Ed, can you get us any bettter pict's? (far side as well?)

We should soon know if the royal hyper black had a casting problem. Mine are supposed to show up tomorrow and I will certainly be looking closely at them.

Casting problem? What makes you think that? It's an impact of some kind. They were either dropped or hit by something. It's a little indentation from the impact.
