cv axle question: search was no help
I have to know because this is bugging the hell out of me:mad:
What is the difference between the 4 bolt and six bolt cv axles? I have a 78 sc 3.0 liter with the 4 bolt axles, is this normal for my year and model? I just read where the 4 bolt axles were only on the early cars. Someone help pleaseSmileWavy I need to know if I should buy 6 bolt axles before I put my motor back in. |
mine is a very early sc, build date of sept 77 and it has six. you got somethin fishy.

ain't that easy! You have to check the trans output flanges first. They are either 6 threaded holes, or 4 threaded and two not. The two not are for the dowel pins. If you only have 4 threaded, no sense changing to a 6 bolt cv right?

The 4 bolt version is a larger diameter bolt then the 6 bolt. So it's not possible to swap one style for the other. The flange and the CV joint have to match. I have the 4 bolt on my race car. There is nothing harmful in having these.
Check the numbers on the transmission to see if that is correct for your year car. (I don't know how to decode them, but others on this forum can) If it's the correct period transmission, then the flanges were changed for some reason. Could be the transmission was swapped for an earlier model and they swapped the CV's rather then doing the flanges and keeping the newer style CV's. These are just a couple of possible scenarios. If you are not having any issues, I would not worry about it. They will work just as well as the 6 bolt versions. |
Thanks John, learn something new daily!!
