Anyone ship wheels and tires before?
I'm looking to get some wheels (9&11X17) with rubber on them shipped from LA to San Fran. Does anyone know of the most economical way to box and ship them?
Thanks- Craig Backer |

FedEx Ground or UPS Ground, we ship exclusive FedEx and I like it, some people have a problem with it but it always works good for us. I have shipped wheels to the east coast at about $40 for two.

The best rates seem to be from Greyhound. I've sent wheels/seats, etc. They only ship from bus station to bus station, but there are plenty around.

cut thick or multiple cardboard circles big enough to cover the face and rear of each wheel/tire covering up to the treads. then wrap in packing tape. ship them all the time this way. boxes for wheel/tire combo too big and bulky. tape only touches tread. same amount of cardboard covering the faces as if it were in a box.

+1 for "by bus"...MUCH cheaper, and I've found it to actually be quicker than FedEx and UPS on the items I've shipped.

I've shipped 4 (2 per box) Fuchs w/ tires from LA to SF (shop around different postal services---i'm amazed at the different rates different stores offer). Total $110

+3 on Greyhound. that being said, the cardboard circle trick works great also. We always simply take two circles and wrap tape around each wheel in a star pattern and send them ups for @ $25.00 a wheel usually.

i wrap them in bubble wrap and use the stretch wrap from my lumber yard. grey hound takes them that way and it's the least expensive option.

+1 on stretch wrap. I put two wheels and tires face in with protection between the wheels. Tie wrap the wheels together through the webs. Wrap the two completely in stretch wrap. Pass on the boxes. I got the wrap at U-Haul.

I've sent them via FedEx with no wrapping and all worked well but I may just be lucky...

I bought a set of four wheels and tires, and had them shipped here USPS Parcel post for 38 dollars a piece in separate boxes, it only took 6 days.

I just received 4 BBS wheels back from the re-finisher by UPS, one of the wheels was damaged partly by rough handling (the box looked like it had been drop from a 10 story building), but also the packing could have been better. When I sent the wheel back for repair I double box it.
