Throw out fork upgrade on G50?
Hey guys,
So my clutch is slipping and I guess it's time for a new clutch. I'm getting one put in in a couple of weeks. Just the standard replacement. I was talking to a colleuge of mine and he asked if I was installing the upgrade. I thought he was talking about a short shift kit and i told him I have the G50 which doesn't require one. He said no, not the Short Shift Kit, he said theres an upgrade to the thrown out fork that uses bearings instead of friction. I don't understand how this area of my car works. Can someone point me to the parts he's talking about? I have an 88 Carrera with the G50 |

There is a factory fix that involves boring the ears of the transmission out and installing larger needle bearings. There is another fix that involves weltmeister push in oilite bearings and does not involve reaming the ears out. There are advocates in both camps.

Thanks Jeremy. Being that I'll only keep the car another year or so I'm probably not going to go with this upgrade, it kinda sounds expensive.

you usually have no choice in the upgrade because your old stuff is shot and you can't get the old stuff anymore. the cross-shaft gets notches worn in it from the needle bearings in the old fork, so the shaft kit and fork is replaced to fix that. then there's the transmission guide tube that doesn't fit the new t/o bearing and has to be updated.

Hi John, thanks for that detail. The mechanic replacing my clutch did mention those parts on the estimate. I remember him saying new guide tube, fork, cluth something, flywheel, etc, so i think he's got it covered then.
