AMSOIL and Lucas oil stabilizer
I switched to amsoil and lucas oil stabilizer a few days ago and the car runs so much smoother, it also made a huge difference in oil temp. I reccomend amsoil and lucas oil stabilizer!

Thanks. I have an Amsoil dealer right near my office. They carry the Lucas stuff as well. I may have to try this out myself.

I use it as well
I have used it for the last 3 years. I got 3 quarts of the lucas stabilzer in with 11 quarts of GTX 20W50.
I will change oil and go full synthetic I think on the next change. But definetly off of the CASTRO. However, the Lucas lowered my engine temps, made the car run smoother and I have yet to have a problem with the motor. But I will change to an amsol or mobil one oil shortly.

I have never put anything in my motor other than 20-50, but started to read about Lucas and put some in my 81 about two weeks ago. I have nothing to do with the company and I have to say that the engine temp went down and the oil pressure up. I have noticed that the car runs much soother. I am sold.

Hi All,
Very interesting thread. I run Mobil 1 Synthetic 15W50 in my 84 911 right now. Have always wondered about Amsoil. Based on your recs, I might give it a shot next oil change. Never heard of the Lucas stuff. Its just called Lucas Oil Stabilizer? No different weights, etc? I'll google it, but would be interested in your thoughts. Additionally, recently I saw a thread about oils. Mobil 1 synthetic was the top if not one of the top synthetics. So, you really think Amsoil is that much better? Again, would love to hear thoughts. I used to run Mobil-1. Now I run the Amsoil 20w50 racing oil with no other additives. I liked it well enough that I became an Amsoil dealer (so I can buy the stuff at wholesale!)
Why NO ADDITIVES? Check out this LINK When I rebuild the trans (maybe later this summer) I will refill it with the Amsoil gear lube in spite of all the Swepco lovers. ![]() ![]()

How can a lubricant make a motor "run smoother"?

I liken Lucas to Bardhaul stop smoke/leak. It makes my 911 smoother and run cooler, and gives the engine a unique smell. Same in worn out gearboxes- works just as good as sawdust for worn synchros- but again a heavier syn, like 75w140 will do the same job (ask me how I know). In the 911, I got the same improvement switching to a synthetic.
Bob the oil guy (search google) doesn't like Lucas as it promotes airation of the oil, which is a bad thing. Just use a good oil and filter and the proper viscosity, and you don't need to run the stuff. On the other hand, there are ZDDP additives that are good for break-in, like the EOS lubricant GM dealerships use for breaking in new engines. There are a few other synthetic additive packages that do work to suppliment your exisitng engine oils, but they are not available easily to the public and cost way more than the price of a good synthetic oil for small amounts. There is one i'm running in my 912 that was over $50/qt.

Could be a Pygmalion Effect or Hawthorn Effect or aka Placebo Effect....
Also - be careful about 3rd party references - Amsoil is a multi-tiered marketing company. They dod a great job at making their "people" believe all sorts of stuff. Talent and performance will open the door but confidence will take you all the way in to the house. Amsoil trains confidence in their reps to the point of brain washing. Now, thats not to say that their products are not any good, they are pretty good. Will you notice a "quite-ing" in your engine? Prehaps if you try to listen for something that isn't there it could be considered quite-ing. Will it actually reduce vibration? Lets think about that. Amsoil has a full synthetic line. Synthetic oils tend to form a pretty good film on moving parts and the film strength can be pretty good as well. If that film strength doesn't become compremised due to heat and remains as aan active barrier than it is possible. Synthetics can do this becuase they have a higher viscosity index than mineral based oils that have a weak add pack. The viscosity index is a value give to oil - the higher the VI, the more stable the viscosity is and the less swing you will have under temp. Also consider that the quite-ing you don't hear may be due to an increase in the viscosity is you have put an additive into an oil that is already stout. As for Lucas - its a fairly well known brand found in all truck stops. Nothing they do is magic, pretty much all their products are coming as repacks for Lubrizol another additive company. They seems to care more about race sponsorship than anything cutting edge. Would I add Amsoil with Lucas? Nope - it would be like taking a few multi-vitamins a day. A waste. Infact it may hurt you in certain situations. For the short run it may give a feeling of well being but maybe not in the long run. Amsoil products are additized pretty well. I don't think they need anything else. That being said, I bet their are a few guys here who have tried various concocions and have found success. Thats fine, and my son doesn't eat meat yet is healthy as a horse. Everybody is different and every engine and transmission is different as well. if your using any of these products and have found success, cool. Sum: Amsoil is pretty goods stuff, right there is Royal Purple and major branded synthetics. Lucas, has additives but they are not needed in a systme already fully formulated.

Ah,
Some definitive and I think unbiased advice. Thats hard to find with all this information overload. So, it seems that for normal mortals, a good oil like Mobil 1 synthetic will do just fine. Thanks Charles. Mike |

That said, you can't go wrong with the Amsoil severe service racing 20w50 or for that matter their v-twin formulation of the same oil in the 20w50. And I'm not a dealer :-) I am currently running Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 in the 911 and Royal Purple Max Cycle 20w50 in the 912.
