1971 T with Factory A/C Parts Missing
I have a 71 T that came with Factory A/c. The problem is all I can see is the rear condenser on the hood, The a/c Lines that have been capped off and the factory vents in the car.
I know I need a compressor and a bracket, but what else do I need? Where can I get the parts? I live in Florida and need A/C. Last edited by Jbizzle78; 10-03-2007 at 09:24 AM.. Reason: Add words |

The factory A/C in these cars never really worked well. The old A/C lines most likely will have to be replaced and I recommend a more modern, economical compressor that will use less power than the original. There are a lot of companies that do retrofit these A/C systems. I have heard good things about Griffiths (http://www.griffiths.com/) in particular.
If you want the original A/C stuff-- front and rear compressors, bracket, etc.-- send me a PM as I have mine and would part with it cheaply....

If the original compressor bracket is one that mounted to the studs holding the chain cover on the the chain case you do not want to use it. Instead, use one of the fabricated steel versions (5 pieces plus fasteners) that attaches to the rear engine mount console, a upper passenger side chain case to engine mounting stud and studs on the top of the passenger side cam tower.
Depending on what was "stripped out" (and how it was stripped out) you may also need the evaporator/ blower and housing (look in smugglers box), a new thermostat switch with capillary line and a front condenser and it's fan. You will also need a new receiver/drier. Then there's the hoses. Plan on spending around $1500 minimum on parts/services unless you round up good used parts. I do not recommend using old used hoses. Flush the oil out of the condensers if you are going to R-134a refrigerant. As has already been said, the original (typically York) compressors are not a good idea. Buy a new Sanden compressor. |

some good tips, but one of the best deals around in finding someone on this board that is parting out a 86 -89 carrera. Why? these have the larger fan equipped evaporator in the smugglers box (don't forget the cover with the bulge in it). And the rest of the parts are usually in better condition.
I would get all new hoses from rennaire, along with their sub cooler. They could provide you with a mount to install it on your carbureted or injected car

I've got a working compressor, both front and rear cooling fin sets, evaporator, overflow tanks and fittings from an 83 for sale. If it doesnt sell I'm going to put it on my 1971.
