993 Conversion - Engine Tin
Hi Guys,
Has anyone got any detailed pics/plans on the engine tin modifications necessary? The engine's a 1997 Varioram, the car's an '84 Carrera. I'm also planning on using the engine crossmember from the Carrera, I guess I just remove the alloy aircon bracket from the 3.6 and bolt the 3.2 straight on? BTW I have an RS crank pulley so no clearance issues down there :D Thanks, Tim. |

console or take a hack saw to the 993 AC console, after cutting off the AC pedestal it will look like the RS part. Some pics of the tin on my '97 engine http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191683067.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191683084.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191683127.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191683208.jpg |
Hi Bill,
Thanks for that! Any idea why the 3.2 crossmember can't be used, I've heard that it's been done before? Cheers, Tim. |
I am picking up a 1992 964 engine this weekend to transplant into my 1981 911sc. I would love details as well.
Here is the list of parts I would like included w/ the engine: Throttle cable Engine wiring harness All Vacuum hoses Smog equipment Alternator (I think is behind the fan stuck to engine) Flywheel and flywheel sensor for computer Exhaust, muffler, cat w/ O2 sensor and wiring Power steering w/ lines Distributors Coils A/C and lines Engine tin Air filter hosing, etc. Fuel Pump, filters and lines (if not too much trouble) Starter DME computer and wiring harness to engine and car Motor mounts Oil reservoir Front oil cooler, lines, fan w/ wiring harness Cruise control module (maybe part of trans?) Other Desired items: Front & Rear calipers and rotors Steering wheel? gray? oil temp gauge if it has #'s instead of lines Anything I am missing that I can get off the car for my 911sc? Luckily the seller is being very cooperative. |

Thanks Ted!
So you used your original crossmember, did you still need the spacers to lower the engine? Thanks, Tim. |
I used the original C3 carrier(several times) w/ a spacer

You can use spacers or make a "bubble in the rear window shelf. I did both 1/2" spacer and a bubble. My car is very low and I didn't want the engine hanging down below the car too much. I had the car on a lift and used a 4x4 with a floor jack to "bubble" the rear window shelf. It is not obvious with the RS carpet kit installed. The bubble is probably 1.5" at the peak and maybe 18" x 10" with a gentle curve.
If you run the single crank pulley (patrick motorsports or other), you can back-date the rear cradle mount and crossmember. (As shown by Ted and Bill). Doug |
If I decide to use the 3.2 engine crossmember does it need to be reinforced? If so, how?
Thanks! |
I did not use a reinforced crossmember and am not aware of others' reinforcements. That doesn't mean it is not necessary.
|
Anyone have any pictures or a description of the crossmember reinforcement?
|
I think the reinforcement is used on the 3.6 crossmember, when it is modified to fit the early chassis. Look at Timmons' website. You can find it through this board with the search function. G-force or something .com

Thanks for the posts so far guys! I'm doing the engine tin mods this weekend and would like to see some more examples if possible (especially the front right of the engine around the power steering area).
