Loss of power then backfire

Last weekend I attended a DE at CMP. While on the track, I was driving and the car just shutdown. I looked at the tach expecting that I had forgotten to up shift and hit the rev limiter (did I mention this was during my very first solo run) but, it was only at about 5k. In just a second or so it backfired and everything was back to normal. I came in and looked at the obvious, coil wire, battery shifting, etc. nothing was out of the norm. I returned to the track for the remaining 15 minutes and also one more 30 minute session after that then a 3 hour drive home. No more issues.

This is a stock ignition and CIS car. Any suggestions of things to look for?

Seems fine now but certainly don't want to have something simple leave me stranded.

Kevin:

A few things,....

How many miles are on your car?

How much gas did you have in the tank?

Some ideas:

1) I would be carefully inspecting the green trigger wire from the distributor as those can be troublesome and create the symptoms you describe.

2) I would also carefully inspect the fuel pump connector, wiring, fuse, and associated components.

Steve, thanks for the reply. The car has just over 190,000 miles on it. I rebuilt the engine at about 172k which was 2.5 years ago and have had no issues since.
There was plenty of fuel.

I have thought often about that green wire. I do know the insulation is very rigid and looks like a part that could fail. Honestly even though I have looked and thought about it I have never considered replacing/repairing it.

The fuel wiring and pump are likely original. Would the backfire indicate fuel was still being pumped in while there was no power or not necessarily? It was a very loud, one shot backfire.

I will check these and any other possibilities this weekend.

Thanks again for your time,

Kevin
