Video inside a cylinder..
Some guy at work found this on You Tube and posted it on the work BBS.
Video captured inside a cylinder of a running engine. I thought it was pretty cool, so here you go... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5815350492893860613&hl=en

not at all what I expected. I thought the power stroke would be far more explosive.

That is very cool. Interesting how you can see local hot spots on the valve. I would have expected a blinding flash. Instead, nice clean combustion. More like a good hot fire.

is it my imagination or is the intake valve rotating even when seated? that can't be normal.

It sure looks like the valve is spinning. I wonder if it's just an optical illusion. There are comments saying this is an old Yamaha 3.0 SHO motor. If you look very close you can see it's a 4 valve head.
Also don't forget that is in an extreme slow motion. It does not indicate what the RPM is, but even at a lowly 3000, each complete stroke of the piston is only .010 long, so a complete firing cycle would be .020. So with the video as slow as it appears, the "explosion" is not going to look like one. All that said, it's an uber cool video.

Very cool.
It got me thinking that doesn't GM have a sapphire engine (clear cylinder) to watch this type of stuff.

Looks like both valves are spinning if you look closely. Very cool video! Thank you!

Hello.
I thinkt there is a reason to believe that they took one strobe-picture for each stroke and delayed the exposure one crank degree for each cycle as it's much easier on data-collecting electtronics in camera. Thus, frames are a multiplex of different power-strokes and valve seems to rotate to extreme degree. Here is another example, filmed trough a hollow piston: Notice flame-propagation delay and imagine how long it takes in a typical 100mm bore 911-head with offset spark plug. Then you understand why 911 engines need more ignition advance than DOHC engine with spark-plug in the middle and why twin-plugged engines need less advance... http://www.tfd.chalmers.se/gr-kurs/mtf240/SI_1200rpm_1.6imep_ign30btdc_lam1_hom_mod.avi

Glad you all thought that was as cool as I did.
I'd like to see a clip of the engine mentioned above with see through "crystal" cylinder(s) if anyone has one... That was an interesting article on the $4,000 /hr wind tunnel, video didn't work for me (if there was video there) though. I always wondered how/what machinery they use to simulate the wind tunnel effects on high end race cars. Thanks !

Note the “condensation cloud” that forms on the intake stroke. This is where the already vaporized fuel in the air mixture condenses into droplets again (just like a cloud) when the pressure drops. It has to re-vaporize again from the heat in the cylinder and the heat from compression. There are four phase changes of the fuel from liquid in the fuel system to vapor in the intake, back to liquid in this ‘cloud’ and finally to vapor during compression so it will burn.
There are commercial components that combine a sparkplug and fiber optics to a video camera to take these video images. We are lucky with a 911 since we can use the second sparkplug port for the video. Best, Grady
