replacing the internal thermostat

Whats the best method and procedure?, do I need to do a full drop or partial, also what should I replace while Im at it? thanks guys

With a Carrera it can be done without doing a full or partial drop, but you'll be taking the AFM off and going over the top.

While you're in theres are oil press switch and breather gasket,

sorry for my ignorance---ummm the afm 'air flow something or nother' maybe?. so I dont need to lower the motor but can squeeze over the top is that right? I better buy a bigger shoehorn

You need to remove the air filter box and the aluminum device (AFM) air flow meter that attaches to the rubber hose that provides air to the intake manifold. Unclip the snorkel, remove the filter and start undoing the small bolts that hold the components to the motor. Behind all that you will find the thermostat and pressure switch.

This job is easier if you're thin and lankey. The further you can get your head and torso wedged above the motor, the easier it will be to see what's happening back there.

Update; well pulling the intake manifold was not to bad, it took me an hour. A couple of things to watch is to make sure the washers under the 12 manifold nuts are removed prior to removing the manifold or they could very easily end up in the cylinder past the intake valve if its open, and thats very bad news. Everything is obvious once its out. The breather gasket has been leaking past the flange and running down number 5 jug and making it appear it was leaking from the pushrod tube. The oil thermostat is very easy to get to also. Ill be changing the hoses I can reach and cleaning up the back of the motor, ---thanks guys for all your expert help, it was greatly appreciated, ----Rob

Hey Rob,
good go. BTW, and I am sure someone else will point it out so it might as well be me - 911's don't have push rods or push rod tubes. (they use overhead cams) I think you must be referring to the oil return tubes on the bottom of the engine?
Feels good to do the repair yourself and save yourself shop labor time.

why did you pull the intake? If you just removed the air filter housing and the AFM, you could have gone right over the top of the intakes to get back there...
