Is downsizing a bad thing???
Looks like the garage might have an open bay in the near future. A new acquisition means that both the 993 and Carrera will have to go. The Carrera is already ready for the long trip up north to meet it's new owner and the 993 will probably be sent packing in the spring unless I can get really creative somehow.
It's hard to let either of these wonderful machines go. I hope it's worth it in the long run.... Nice:D
Good replacement choice. |
Your 2 old cars were very, very nice!
Slopenose turbo . . . hmm. They definitely were cool cars. I remember reading about them in Car and Driver and Road and Track when they were new. I think I could dig up and scan an article or two if you want. There was the one in particular, I think in C&D, a white one (convertible) on the cover, said something like "Zoomy nose, drop top, huge price!" or something like that (that's a very rough paraphrase!). I read that article 20 times as a late teenager/early 20'er. The cost of those new was crazy, I think the C&D one stickered at around $120K, and that was in the 80s, when you could still buy a decent house, even in Southern California, for that kind of money! So very cool car. I just hope you end up being happy with it. I know I probably wouldn't, because while I'd have a great deal of fun kicking around in your Carrera and 993, I'd be scared to drive such a rare, low mileage car like that 505 930S, and I know I would end up admiring it in the garage quite a bit, but not driving it much. More pics when you get it! |
P.S. What color is that? Is it the "silver rose" like they used on a lot of the 944 Turbo S cars in the late 80s?
|
I'd love to see those articles if you can find them...I'm trying to dig up all the info I can now.
I have thought long and hard and actually at this point in my life I want the kind of car I can bring up a notch or two and feel that the time and money were well spent. I did that with the Carrera but it was mainly a labor of love. I only drove her 3K miles in 3 years. I know what you are thinking but each of those miles were on drives to great places like Sebring and Daytona to watch races I went to in my youth when mileage wasn't an issue. Now I kind of like the preservation idea. I'm actually trying the same thing with myself ;) |
The color is called nougat brown metallic. Kind of reminded me of one the 944 colors I was choosing from back in '86 as well.
|
Hey, I sat in that car last Friday. I am "the other guy in town with a factory slope". PM me if you get a chance SmileWavy

I suspect you will miss driveablility and well (hate to say it) having a good looking car. The two you are selling are great looking coupes, no extra scoops and holes and they have real 911 fenders on them. Be careful, you will miss having a car that looks like a Porsche.
|
Ha ha ha... you are an *********. You started it... :)
|
Congratulations on the new car, but sorry to see the Carrera go. I've admired it for some time, having, to my eye, a great aesthetic balance of color scheme, stance and tail. Nicely understated, it just worked. I'm not much for the chi-chi boxed rockers, strakes, slant, but it looks like a neat car. Have fun with it.

Hey Early Porsche,
I still have this: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192321378.jpg and if I'm not mistaken slant nose style fenders were on more LeMans winning 911 based cars that "real 911" fenders :) I guess I now find myself defending a look I was not originally drawn too but I'll tell you one thing it does grow on you....especially when it's bone stock inside and out. Shaun, Thanks for the kind words on the Kiln Red car. The look was something I just stumbled on. I will miss her no doubt. It's been a great car and a blast to drive but I've wanted a turbo for a while as well as a car that was a bit more unique. We will see soon enough if I made the right choice.... |
You had me going in the start of the thread;..... then appears this hot looking slant nose turbo. C'mon!!!! That is sweet, no brainer, great decision. Congrats!
Problem with common sense is that it's not too common! Happy Days, |
Oh if you have a long hood then I wouldn't care if you even bought.....a cayman.
|
I love that Kiln Red Carerra. Beautiful color esp with the graphic.

I had to go deep into the attic to dig this up, but here it is. Man, I had this article almost committed to memory back in '87. The Slope Nose option, just that one option, was almost $24K! That was a lot of dough back then. That was enough to buy a whole Mazda MX-6 Turbo (one of the other cars tested in the issue). With enough left over to buy most of another one of the test cars (Buick Regal)! Scanner isn't working, but here's some pics: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192373802.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192373847.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192373881.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192373935.jpg |

There was another good article, not quite as long, from RT or CD back then, I think it was a red coupe, but I can't locate it. I know I have it somewhere. I remember it had a great line, about enthusiasts rapping on the front fender, letting out a whistle when they realize it is "genuine Zuffenhausen steel, not City of Industry fiberglass." LOL.

I'd be sorry to lose that Carrera..........sorry to be a buzzkill.

Awesome article! Thanks for posting! I have a 1985 930S. Not a cabriolet but still as much fun to drive with the sunroof open. I used to have that magazine but got rid of it years ago. A few months back I got my white 930S and regretted not having the literature to go along with it. Slowly but surely I am recouping all of the literature available on the slopes. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of info on the ROW cars but at least there is some. Here's a pic of my new toy.

Very nice looking slant. I'm sure it's a blast to drive. I love the color-coded wheels too.
That said, I'm going to miss seeing that Kiln red beauty here on Pelican. As others have said, it was a GREAT looking car. Perfect in many respects. Good luck! I hope you made the right decision! |
the,
Thanks for the article much appreciated. Also thanks for all the compliments on the Kiln Red car. Like I said, I will miss it too. I'll have to get the new owner to post pictures every now and then. Worse comes to worse (but I doubt it will) I know the recipe if I want to make a new one :D It's interesting, the 993 is more valuable car but the Kiln Red car has always gotten the most attention even by people who like the newer cars. |
Very nice!! Not a bad thing to downsize if it is like that...
Here are two photos of some nice flatnose I saw Saturday at the Oktober Fast event at Daytona... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192457660.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192457687.jpg |
I sold my '88 factory slantnose a few years back to purchase a really sweet '73 longhood (RS conversion). My slant had 21k miles on it and was in concours condition. I didn't drive it much for two reasons: it was pristine, and secondly, the turbo lag with the factory setup wasn't that fun. It was totaly flat until the boost came on, then she ran pretty well. I enjoy quick throttle response and the turbo didn't have any of it.
Nice car...enjoy it, because first and foremost, it's your car/your decision! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192458614.jpg |
Thanks for the pictures. I'm starting to look for all the ways that the original factory cars can be distinguished from the re-creations in photos.
The red one from Daytona is an obvious re-creation and the silver one is a Euro (or at least configured like one) but I can't tell the year. I'm still trying to learn the differences between the 87-89 cars and the earlier special wishes ones. Any advice from the experts would be appreciated. |
What are you planning on doing with it? Are you going to drive it much?
|
the,
Maybe 1-2k a year. Sorry, I know but it's just my nature at this point. Long story...It has to do with my whole Porsche adventure thru life. I got my first one when I was 18, a new 914 2.0 followed that a year later with a new 911. My first few I drove the wheels off of. I probably had 200K miles between my two '74's. Now especially with living in Florida...the land of straight roads, love bugs and salt spray I just wouldn't drive any nice 911 every day. They are strictly a pleasure car for me. I do love bringing them up to a level of preparation that's as close as possible or better than new. I'm sure it's OCD related :) And I really love these cars. I have since day 1. All I know is that whoever buys a 911 I've owned will be impressed with the state of care it received. Now I know there are some out there that will counter that if I haven't driven them much I wasn't caring for them but believe me the maintenance is always regularly done, the cars are driven for 20 minutes minimum after warmup and a few times a year they make the 200 mile trek to Sebring for the HSR and 12hour races.. |

The red one had Ruf badges on it... how can you tell it is a re-creation?? I touched those fenders and those were metal... everything looked period correct... of course, I am no expert in these cars. Can you share what gives away a conversion? A few more photos of the red one... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192461372.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192461400.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192461418.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192461531.jpg |

The only difference between us, currently, is that I have another one, more of a "driver," that I do drive on a regular basis (few times per week). |
Wachuko,
Please realize that I've been an "expert" for about a week... but on the red one the first clue is on (or should I say not on) the boxed rockers...Doesn't mean it isn't a nice job or beautiful car though... the, We do sound a lot alike. I often joke with my wife that I'm a museum caretaker. I have other hobbies that add to that impression. Thanks to guys like us some day there will still be a few nice "old" cars left on the road. It's funny I do take the '73 T out at least once a week. That thing just likes going for little jaunts around town. |
