Is downsizing a bad thing???

Looks like the garage might have an open bay in the near future. A new acquisition means that both the 993 and Carrera will have to go. The Carrera is already ready for the long trip up north to meet it's new owner and the 993 will probably be sent packing in the spring unless I can get really creative somehow.

It's hard to let either of these wonderful machines go. I hope it's worth it in the long run....

Slopenose turbo . . . hmm. They definitely were cool cars. I remember reading about them in Car and Driver and Road and Track when they were new. I think I could dig up and scan an article or two if you want. There was the one in particular, I think in C&D, a white one (convertible) on the cover, said something like "Zoomy nose, drop top, huge price!" or something like that (that's a very rough paraphrase!). I read that article 20 times as a late teenager/early 20'er.

The cost of those new was crazy, I think the C&D one stickered at around $120K, and that was in the 80s, when you could still buy a decent house, even in Southern California, for that kind of money!

So very cool car. I just hope you end up being happy with it. I know I probably wouldn't, because while I'd have a great deal of fun kicking around in your Carrera and 993, I'd be scared to drive such a rare, low mileage car like that 505 930S, and I know I would end up admiring it in the garage quite a bit, but not driving it much.

P.S. What color is that? Is it the "silver rose" like they used on a lot of the 944 Turbo S cars in the late 80s?

I have thought long and hard and actually at this point in my life I want the kind of car I can bring up a notch or two and feel that the time and money were well spent. I did that with the Carrera but it was mainly a labor of love. I only drove her 3K miles in 3 years. I know what you are thinking but each of those miles were on drives to great places like Sebring and Daytona to watch races I went to in my youth when mileage wasn't an issue. Now I kind of like the preservation idea. I'm actually trying the same thing with myself

The color is called nougat brown metallic. Kind of reminded me of one the 944 colors I was choosing from back in '86 as well.

I suspect you will miss driveablility and well (hate to say it) having a good looking car. The two you are selling are great looking coupes, no extra scoops and holes and they have real 911 fenders on them. Be careful, you will miss having a car that looks like a Porsche.

Congratulations on the new car, but sorry to see the Carrera go. I've admired it for some time, having, to my eye, a great aesthetic balance of color scheme, stance and tail. Nicely understated, it just worked. I'm not much for the chi-chi boxed rockers, strakes, slant, but it looks like a neat car. Have fun with it.

and if I'm not mistaken slant nose style fenders were on more LeMans winning 911 based cars that "real 911" fenders

I guess I now find myself defending a look I was not originally drawn too but I'll tell you one thing it does grow on you....especially when it's bone stock inside and out.

Thanks for the kind words on the Kiln Red car. The look was something I just stumbled on. I will miss her no doubt. It's been a great car and a blast to drive but I've wanted a turbo for a while as well as a car that was a bit more unique. We will see soon enough if I made the right choice....

I had to go deep into the attic to dig this up, but here it is. Man, I had this article almost committed to memory back in '87.

The Slope Nose option, just that one option, was almost $24K! That was a lot of dough back then. That was enough to buy a whole Mazda MX-6 Turbo (one of the other cars tested in the issue). With enough left over to buy most of another one of the test cars (Buick Regal)!

There was another good article, not quite as long, from RT or CD back then, I think it was a red coupe, but I can't locate it. I know I have it somewhere. I remember it had a great line, about enthusiasts rapping on the front fender, letting out a whistle when they realize it is "genuine Zuffenhausen steel, not City of Industry fiberglass." LOL.

Awesome article! Thanks for posting! I have a 1985 930S. Not a cabriolet but still as much fun to drive with the sunroof open. I used to have that magazine but got rid of it years ago. A few months back I got my white 930S and regretted not having the literature to go along with it. Slowly but surely I am recouping all of the literature available on the slopes. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of info on the ROW cars but at least there is some. Here's a pic of my new toy.

Very nice looking slant. I'm sure it's a blast to drive. I love the color-coded wheels too.

That said, I'm going to miss seeing that Kiln red beauty here on Pelican. As others have said, it was a GREAT looking car. Perfect in many respects.
