Angry Double whammy...

I took off the wheels tonite to grease the ER polybronzes and got to the RR last, but there were a couple of nice surprises waiting for me there:

Looks like I'm doing boots. Although, there's something different about the 85(?) and on that makes this more difficult? Can't recall; will have to look it up.

Worse, shortly thereafter I noticed that my RR sway bar bushing is essentially hanging. The welding on the bracket is globular at best, so it appears to have been done before.:

Not smiles all around. Ripped of course, although I’m not sure why. I don’t track the car or really drive hard enough to rip a sway bar mount loose. My only guess is that the bushing bound to the bar or wouldn’t allow it to turn and it ripped out the mount instead.

I would like to do CV boots and repack, then have replacement sway brackets welded in, along with a couple new sway bushings.

Or, does anyone think I should weld up the torn existing mount, and ensure easy bushing movement, then call it quits? The car has 22's & 29's and stock sways (to my knowledge). Rear is ~ 22.5 mm.

It's the suck, but it gets things fixed I guess. Is it only talc that's recommended for lubing these? Who makes the best brackets? Thanks for any thoughts, or any tips I don't know (particularly on the bracket),

ianc

The factory sway-bar mount rips because that's just what they do. They really were under designed.

As Bob says get the Wevo and this will be the last time it will have to be repaired. Pelican sells them as well.

No way the rubber constrained the sway bar from rotating enough to rip the metal mount, unless it was already pretty cracked.

A 1.2mm (I'm exaggerating a wee) folded part holding a 22mm sway bar on the vehicle is just plain silly. Fix it & box it (loosing access to the weld nuts - could get annoying in the future) or use the above suggested part.

Do those Wevo parts weld on? They look thick to weld to body sheetmetal...

I ripped two off on my 87 coupe. Porsche has a replacement [probably aftermarket also] that welds right in.

OK, looks like I'll be ordering up a set of the WEVO's.

How about the bushings? Anything better than the factory rubber available, or is that OK?

Also, what products would you use to prep the area around the weld after it's been completed? Just prime and paint from a rattle can? POR 15 or something? Dunno; I've been blissfully free of any rust-related issues here in CA thus far...

Thanks for the advice...

I've been lucky so far with the rear bar mounts but the wevo mounts are on the list though. It's probably safer to take care of those before the inevitable happens.
Repacking the cv's isn't too bad, just very messy. Get some of those thin blue rubber gloves and a buncha rags etc. and guess you need new boots. I repacked mine 2 years ago and put in new bolts and washers. The bearings did have some wear but not bad so they went back in.

Hi Mike,

Nope, it's a G50 I'm afraid.

Could still use some advice on products to use for prepping the weld area though if anybody's got some helpful hints...

Well,

I took care of this nasty little business over the weekend at my friend's shop. Luckily the place next door to my friend's shop is a metal fabrication business, so I had one of the guys come over and weld the WEVO pieces on after I'd finished grinding the old ones off. Not an exceptionally neat welding job, but looks solid. Finished up with a couple of coats of POR15.

All in all a nasty PITA...

Looks good. I really should just do this (have it done) before mine rip out by themselves.
