ID these brake calipers please?

The brakes on my 1971 Targa arent great, i´ve bled them mercilessly to no avail.

I get 20.6MM on the rotors in the rear, 20.3MM on the fronts. I cant find any markings on the calipers other than the ATE on the fronts.

The pads are nearly new but I dont know what they are. Black backings and black/copper sintered appearing. They dont grab well until they get a lot of heat in them, I think they were the PO´s track set. A mechanic from the shop (understudy) wasnt sure but thought they looked like 2.7 units, which is possible since the engine is a 2.7 transplant.

Any help IDing these is appreciated.

Have you rebuilt the calipers? If they need a rebuild, and it sure sounds like they do, then bleeding until eternity will not improve the braking. The calipers look like the Carrera wide type but if you are using stock 2.7 or SC rotors, you don't have enough rotor. Please measure the spacer thickness between the 2 halves of the caliper. You show it clearly in picture 2.

The fronts are aluminum S calipers, the rotors should be 20mm new, if they are wider then they were 24mm new and have worn or been machined down. It is unusual but not unheard of to run the S calipers on the later 24mm Carrera rotors

the rears look to be wide M calipers from a MY84-89 Carrera rear. The rotors should be 24mm new

If the above is correct then that is an odd combination. The rears should be changed back to '69-83 20mm rotor w/ M caliper and the front should have 20mm MY69-83 front rotors.

Ditch the track pads for street use.

Thanks guys, and Bill for your offline response also.

Agree the pads need to go at least to something new and known and I´m willing to rebuild whats worth keeping however without knowing what I have I dont know which rebuild kit i need....

If those front S calipers are indeed able to take 24mm Carrera rotors and they can be applied here then I´d consider that a good thing since I hace a set of new OEM carerra rotors in the box that cost $500 down here...would like to put them to use...

The fronts are as shown in the 3rd and 4th pics. they are not magnetic and are goldish in color with 19mm spacing between mounting bolts. They are the 1-piece ones, no spacers. So maybe 74-77 2.7 S front calipers with old 24mm rotors stuffed in?

I have the front jacked up so cant measure the rear caliper spacers but maybe they are M wide calipers with worn rotors?

How wide are S and SC rotors when new?

I think Bill has already answered your last question already. Check the Carrera rotors you have in the box and make sure they are 24mm.

all '69-83 911/911Carrera/911SC used the same vented 20x282.5mm rotor in front and vented 20x290mm rotor in back

exception - some '69 t did have solid 18mm f/r rotors

IF you measured correctly the rotors have to be 24mm originally. I have found that correct measurement is not easy to come by.

also measure the width of the spacer between the rear caliper halfs, that is another indicator

S calipers are aluminum and anodized so that part fits, but once again measurements appear to have been done incorrectly. All S calipers will have 3.5" on center mounts, yes, they used English units in those days.

S calipers will not natively accept 24mm rotors, usually the rotor has to be machined down to fit. Might as well use oem 20s
