Distributor issue help.

I have a vac adv distributor in my 2.7 CIS. recently I have experienced some issues with timing.
I want to dis-assemble the distributor and cleeeen it.

SO first question
What is the best way to dismantle the distributor?

second

How do I set the Dwell the easiest?

Thanks
and yes I have concluded that the cetrifugal part is sticking and vac adv/ret works properly if not a little sluggish due to Dirt.

Are you sure it is a vacuum advance not a retard?

Setting the dwell is best done w/ a dwell meter. You want 38* +/-3*. I like to set mine initially @ 35 then as the rub block wears down, the angle gradually opens to 41.

If you search Gunter, I'm pretty sure he did a recent thread on dizzy refurb. It will be similar to yours.

Not sure - I think I am the "retard"....... But yeah I suppose it is a vacuum retard with centrifugal advance.

I'll look up Gunter.

thx

Your distributor has a vacuum retard module, not advance, and it is only active at idle speeds! It isn't necessary during normal engine operation, so the centrifugal advance mechanism is quite critical to throttle response and drivability!

Here is a thread with all of the info you need.

distributor lube...

Remove distributor after turning engine over to TDC #1 cylinder by alternator/fan pulley nut -- 22 mm 6-point socket or wrench.

To clean centrifugal advance parts ... take digital pics as you proceed [if possible, in 'macro' or closeup mode] and store all parts in compartmented boxes or egg cartons. Disassembly is best done in a corner of a room on a card trable [or equivalent] while facing the corner ... to minimize the distance small flying parts can travel!

1. Remove cap, rotor, and dust cover.

2. Remove vacuum module, 'E-clip', and screws

3. Remove point plate after removing spring-tensioned retaining cup for ball bearing, and then the ball bearing. Point plate must be rotated approx. 90° to clear indentations in the distributor body.

4. Remove felt plug and internal snapring from camshaft.

5. Lift camshaft and un-hook springs from anchor arms. Remove camshaft.

6. Centrifugal weights and springs should now be accessible for cleaning.

Good luck!
