Need help identifying a part that fell out of my 959 door...
I know I've seen this before, but I can't tell where it comes from. Tom Woodford thinks it's part of the latch mechanism, and possibly a remnant from an old broken mechanism that was replaced a long time ago. But, I can't really see in there too well to tell where this goes, or where it's supposed to go, and I don't have any spare doors to look at, or a really good photo either.
Anyone have any additional information? The part is metal - looks like aluminum to me. It looks like it should be pressed onto something else - there are no screw holes in it. I think it might be related (as Tom said) to the lock key / opening / closing mechanism. I'm at home right now, and can't look at the car either. PET isn't really helpful either: http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLookup/HTML/E_959_KATALOG/804-05-Frame3.htm I think it's part of item number 1 on the diagram above. -Wayne |
Ooops, forgot the photo...

Oh, and that's just a random post-it note, it's not a mirror cap.
Thanks, Wayne |
Wayne that is part of the window regulator. Holds the wind up spring in place. I posted a similar picture and posting probably 2-3 years ago. If your window still works then someone already replaced the part and left the broken piece in the bottom of the door.
Here is my thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/191734-what-part.html?highlight=window+regulator |
Heh. I once pulled something like that out of my 356.
Turned out to be a window piece. |
What they said.......window regulator part for the rewind/wind-up spring;)
|
Yep, I found one in my door too. I heard it fall out when lowering the window. It sounded like somebody had dropped a rock inside the door. My window still goes up and the part has not been replaced. The inner end of the spring is normally held by this part. I used a mirror to look at the location and found the spring was still in place and doing its job. It is wedged in a tight place. It might pop loose at some point and make a nasty noise but for now it still functions. You would probably need to remove and rebuild/replace the regulator to fix it correctly. The mounting area on yours is distorted just like mine.
Considering your car and resources, I don't recommend waiting for it to pop loose. It could damage an unobtainium door panel. It is project #102! |
Cool. I thought it might have been a window regulator piece, but I wasn't sure. Didn't Weltmeister make an upgraded piece to replace this? Seems like it should be tapped and screwed in here - looks like the Germans cheaped out on this one...
Thanks guys, this does help a lot... -Wayne |

Seems like a bad design to me. I also seem to remember myself saying something like this many years ago. If this piece is missing, I think I will take out the regulator, and tap this piece, and screw it in permanently, instead of this "press-fit" stuff... -Wayne |
I replaced those things every six months on my 959. Eventually replaced it with the GM equivalent.
|
not really press-fit -- they (at least by '73) are 'peened' in -- still lousy
maybe this will stimulate Pelican to carry an upgrade part... what is the GM equivalent?? |
Actually, Weltmeister makes an upgrade part, I will make sure that we put it in the catalog. I remember seeing this in a competitor's catalog 10 years ago, before I started Pelican...

Wayne,
You've only had the 959 a few weeks and you've already broken it! |
I too, am in the "whatzit broken window regulator piece" club. Welcome!!!!!
Many enter, but few leave this club, it seems. |
Now I have something in common with a 959.

i've fixed lots of them with washer and a bolt. drill and tap of course. it would be nice to have a reasonably priced source for these. i have a lot of regulators that need to be fixed. as long as the piece hasn't split, it can be reinstalled. there are long and short ones and some have the slot on the same plane as the flat sides of the opposite end and some are 90° to it.
|
FWIW, the Weltmeister piece must weigh 2-3 times the Porsche piece. At least it felt that way when I fixed my broken regulator.
|
yeah, it's steel, not pot metal. mo betteh.
|
I managed to stuff my head in there tonight, and saw that there appears to be an intact pivot piece in regulator, so I suspect this is from a previous regulator failure. Lots of bad things happening in this door, I will post on another thread...

Just saw this note. Porsche does not sell just the pivot pin. They want to sell you an entire assembly. You can see the Pivot Pins listed on the P****** P**** Catalog. Your folks at the order desk are able to get them once you give them the competitor's catalog number at the same price. They come in 4 "flavors". The P******* P**** Part numbers are 910391, 910392, 910393, and 910394. It would be nice to see it listed here directly. This issue comes up on this BBS about once a year. |
