My Story OR Want to Kill Some Time?

Hey folks,

One of my dreams has finally come true. I OWN A 911!!! WOO HOO!!! As they say, it's always best to start at the beginning.

A long time ago (relatively), in a land far, far away (from SoCal), there once lived a young boy. He had grown up admiring his father's MG's and his uncle's Corvettes/Mustangs. He never really desired to own one, but they were pretty nonetheless. Well, after several years of careful nurturing, he saw a magazine on the table that changed his life. The name of the periodical is of no consequence, but the article therein was like poetry to the small child. It contained the story of a man. No, not a man, but a legend. A legend named Ferdinand Porsh! "What a silly name," thought the boy. The child, though, was impressed by the beauty of all pictures of the cool silver and red convertibles. It was at that moment that the child began a quest.

As the child grew, he became smarter. He became wiser. He became aware that the cars that he so adored cost three times more than the average car. Being a realist, and a bit of a cynic, he had accepted that his dream would remain as such. He would never be able to afford such a lovely creature. The dream, however, refused to die.

Eventually, the child grew into a naive teenager. The teenager had become gainfully employed, and was astounded by a peculiar concept of money. He had never had any before and was unsure of its use. Quickly, though, he realized that he could buy lots of food and clothes and toys. Unfortunately, for our young hero, he neglected to realize that this "money" could be stored in "banks" in order to amass an amount that he could trade for bigger, faster toys. The teenager became adept at surviving on $20 per week.

Finally, the teenager transformed into a young man. He had come understand the whole money thing, and began to search for his dream, albeit still far off. As many have done before, he quickly found a Porsche. He had learned how to speak the word by now. The Porsche he had dreamed of as a child was here, but it wasn't like anything in those pictures. This was what they called a 914. What a strange beast this was, but, as we Teeners know, it's still a Porsche. So, for the sum total of $600 and rusty Corvair, the man owned a Porsche.

Okay, so it didn't run. It was a rust bucket. He had to buy two other 914's to mesh into one. He stalled on the restoration, and he gave up. At least now, he could say that he owned 2.5 Porsches. Our hero, though, quickly realized that the 914 was only a step on the way to his dream. It was fun, but it was not what he desired.

When the young man began his career, he thought that the dream would die with it. He had never heard of a high school math teacher with a Porsche, let alone a 911. By now, his dream had been refined to a 1987 - 89 911 Carrera Cabriolet, Guards Red w/cork interior, with the Turbo Look, and the black script "PORSCHE" on the back. Not that he'd thought about it, though. With a regular salary, the man began to save.

This is where we meet the man today. About 15 years after the fever had consumed him, he was at the precipice. He spent about 2 months searching for a car that was still within his meager budget. He was still a teacher, remember. After several failed attempts and two PPI purchases, he had found a car. No, it was not THE dream. It was, however, a real-live 911 (and it ran, and it was pretty, and it was mine!) For an amazingly low price, he drove two and a half hours to pick up his brand new 1982 911 SC. He has become a member of the family.

The man is fully cognizant of the issues of all 911's, especially older 911's. He intends on using this forum to its fullest extent. He is sure that many questions will arise. It is known that pictures will atone for all sins, so I present to you my baby. More will come. I think it needs a name.

Thanks for reading.

Alan

Alan,

I will pass on a name for your car. It is one that my wife came up with years ago when I finished restoring a 1966 Corvair Corsa coupe. It is LIFRIC. That stands for "Little Fat Red Car". Lifric I was unfortunately "killed' by a driver that ran a red light. Maybe the name will be more fortutitous for you.

Nice car! Congrats and welcome!

Oh, and you have great taste - my first 911 was also a red SC targa! I still miss that car and my daughter often reminds me that 'the red one was faster'

Wow, Franklin, KS, you really are in the middle of nowhere! Welcome to the board. You got your car just in time to head down to Porsche Palooza in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. http://pca-msr.org/

Congratulations! I know you will enjoy the car! (hey, he had a Corvair, so he MUST be an OK guy, right?)

Wow, Kurt, you must have used Mapquest or something. Our only claim to fame is the tornado that ripped out half our town a few years ago. The entire town is about 120 people. We're even unincorporated, so we're only governed by the county cops and state troopers. Anyway, I'd love to come to Eureka, but I'll be at my brother's last football game.

Thanks all for the kind replies. I've been using this forum for a while, so I am familiar with all the names and stuff. I DO know where the search button is. However, it took me a long time to figure out what SCWDP stood for. I don't remember seeing it on that abbreviations thread. I'll have to start coming to those meetings.

Congrats and welcome aboard Alan! Nice looking car. How about "Red"? JK

Hope you can make it down to the Palooza. We all need to figure out a way to ID each other. The one's with SCWDP badges are easy enough. Any other ideas.

Alan, if you do come down for the Palooza, make sure you get your reservations quickly, as there are not many rooms left, from what I have been told.

Kansas - flat.

Porsche - fast

Roads - empty.

The rest of the story, you can put that together yourself.

PS I live in Iowa, which isn't a whole hell of a lot different, except we do have a couple hills and no wheat.

Nice ride!

That is one very nice looking car.

RE: names - may I suggest doing some research on German math icons and adopt one of these names?

Looks very clean. All Porsches don't get to run the Autobahn or Mulholland, but they get to be admired by their owners everywhere.

Rouxroux,

Thanks, my second Corvair was a 1966 Monza convertible w/ a 140 hp and 4 spd. I added the Corsa dash from the wrecked coupe so it was "almost" a Corsa! I now drive a 1980 911SC sunroof coupe.
