Sta-Bil and Chevron ProGuard bogus or benifical??

I use Chevron Pro-Guard about every three months, in both of my '88 911 and '96 993, and have heard this is a "diluted"/less concentrated Techron formula. Anyone know what the real differences are between Chevron ProGuard and Techron?? Could any tell me what the fuel preserver StaBil has in it and if it is recommeded for tanks that only get used up every 2-3 months. I do try to top off my gas tank whenever possible.

From the head chemist at the refinery I used to work at:

"sta-bil works to a certain extent. It will not keep gas forever but it will extend it's shelf life."

Chevron has advertised for a long time thet their additive is techron which is good stuff (as additives go) but i can't help but think it is seriously diluted in the gasoline you buy, or the stuff in the bottle at your FLAPS is seriously concentrated. There just isn't that much difference between gasoline from station a vs. station b.

Sta-bil is recommended by the best source I know: The Auto Technician's Gasoline Quality Guide.

I have been using Sta-bil for many years. It does work like they say it will. I live in a hurricane prone location, and keep gasoline in several 5gal. jugs for if and when the power goes out. I also keep the Sta-bil treated gas in my generator. I do use their recommended higher dosing for longer keeping. If, after about 2 years or so, if I have not used all of the "old" treated fuel, I go ahead and drain the large tank on the generator, and then start using the treated 5gal. jugs in my pickup, till I have a totally, new and freshly treated stockpile, to have for the next couple of hurricane seasons. I do use Techron, and really do like it. I haven't used the other product mentioned.

That is exactly what I do...I also, as Sta-bil recommends, run the engine after treatment until it gets in the entire fuel system.

The generator and farm equipment start right up every Spring

I put StaBil in my full gas tank at the end of every driving season and when I start the car in the spring (3-4 months), it starts right up and runs great!
