Another mid year targa newbie

Hello to everyone, I am new to the Porsche world and to pelican.I am happy to report my first purchase from pelican was a cap, not the one I wanted but it said Porsche. I hope they have the parts I need when I need them. Anyway I recently purchased a 1974 911targa S. I am unsure of the direction I would like to go in, restore to original or hot rod. I have records dating back to 1990my at which time the car had only 10,000 miles on it. Today's she's @ 25,200 miles. Every car has its story and I would like to uncover 1974 to 1990the any advice. Also a few things look wrong to me, the black targa band. The rear bumper rubber looks to wide for the year. I am aware of the carrera flares a.d the 16" fuch's. The car was originally delivered in California. Thank you for having me.

wow

i have no idea about the period specific stuff

but as a fellow middy targa owner i say WOW

would love some pics of interior

and for what its worth dont change a thing

my middy went into the shed yesterday to begin the restoration like you not completely sure which way to go

already have a number of important upgrades, 11blade fan, oil cooler, turbo covers, carrera tensioners, big front brakes

im thinking fix any broken stuff eg dash rear brakes rear sway bar then remove rain gutter, push in both bumpers add carrera flares then wheels to suit

re vamp interior , full ignition upgrade , add brake booster, short shifter, turbo tie rod, led dash lights and of course new seals to prevent water leaks.

not sure about mirrors i have a set of flag mirrors but am thinking about talbot style so if anyone has pics if middy targa with talbots would love to see them keep us all informed of your progress

Regards Michael

Welcome!

I am not sure about it. But it seems to me that your Targa bar might originally have been brushed stainless steel because your window trim all around is chrome. I think original black trim included the window treatments. My 79 SC has the original chrome trim package that was actually standard then:

Yes, you are right about those modifications:
Flares added, wrong rims, wrong rear bumpers, wrong mirrors, wrong targa belt. Looks to me like an adaption to SC-style which does not mean any bad, but not original. But if the car is in the right shape and the engine also has undergone the same procedure as the body I would not care as long as you are not looking for the original car. But in hat case I doubt you bought this car in first place. So +1 on maintaining this car in great shape and doing nothing else than driving and enjoing it. Personally I personally would change to the stainless targa belt and the small bumpers for better balance. You have chrome trim with the windows so a stainless steel targa belt would look better. Also the chrome mirrors would be great with the chrome door handles - but this is not interchangable once the elephant ears are monted.

Humdaddy,

Congratulations and welcome.

Somewhere down the line sombody did a lot of work to that car.

It's also had the operable wing windows removed and the 76-77 chrome non ops added. I would a agree the car would look better with the targa bar brought to stainless. Not that it looks bad now In my opinion it would just be that much nicer.

Good luck and enjoy.

Love the white targa with stainless the blue is killer too. What's the bad wrap with mid year targs's I guess they just don't get. Who would drive a sports car without the wind their hair? Anyway about the bar, does the rear window need to know e removed to replace the targa belt because the car would definitely look wrong ether with the stainless. Also smoothing the bumper and putting 2 outs for the exhaust. Thinking about b&B's.
