If you like the car better with a tail. Offer up the turbo tail as a swap for the correct carrera tail in the classifieds and then get yourself a chin spoiler as well, who knows what type of deal you might do. There are still a few wide body projects out there that would like that tea tray you have got.

Me...want...tail My car originally came with a tail, but one of the dealers somewhere down the lien that sold it, removed it when they sold it to one of the previous owners. One of the owners I contacted had asked if the car still had it's tail... We had wondered about it, since my Carrera Badge sits low... Been looking for a nice tail for quite some time now, in Alpine white. |
I say keep the tail and get a front lip spoiler.

I agree, keep the tail and add the front lip spoiler. For high speed autobahn and future track days, you'll wish you had them. Those items were added for high speed stability. German engineering is purpose driven, as opposed to the Italians which make it look good first. It may not be the classic "clean" look, but it's very functional.

I guess I'm in the camp that finds the tea-tray turbo tail rather out of proportion for the non-turbo cars. I bought a 78 SC that had the tea tray style of spoiler and converted it to the the 77 era turbo tail. Here are pics of before and after.

IMO, the car looks sleeker and cleaner without the tail. It was not part of the original design, but tacked on later to provide extra stability at high speed.
If high speed is part of your metier, you might want to consider keeping it no matter how bad it looks. Just be sure to add a chin spoiler as well. You'll save 20-25 lbs hanging high off the back of the car by getting rid of it, ianc |
For high speed handling and stability you can lower and corner balance + tail + splitter. These cars produce something like 300 lbs of lift at 80 mph w/out tails & turbo tails counter that better than a tucktail.
If it's just a garage and parade queen then the next owner will appreciate that you kept the oil circulating without driving it hard enough to require being setup. |

I have one on my Grand Prix White 1982. I would loose it in a heartbeat for the regular hood if I could fine a Concours condition replacement - anyone?

i have a regular hood that is mint that i would trade for one with a tail.I personaly love the look of the tail and wide body.

I drove my 3.2 without the Turbo tail for several months and found that the car felt more agile than before though the rear end was not as well footed as before at high speed above 100 mph. Putting the tail back reconfirmed my impression but the car felt a bit heavy and dull in comparison.
I like the look with the tail and the nimble feel without it. Could a duck tail be the solution? Maybe. |

after years of not having a tail on my targa i put one on (don't forget to do the front) purist said targas look terrible with the tail - it doesn't BUT the car handles much better. there is a significant difference at higher speeds and cornering

My 82 SC RoW came from the factory with air dam & tea tray, which makes it a "stock" option as far as I'm concerned.
I like the look without the tail, but I like to drive in excess of 85/90 mph on occasion. Even with the dam and tail the front end begins to go light upward from that speed (I've only had mine to 130 mph indicated and really didn't feel like pushing further - knuckles were starting to whiten a bit). If I only drove around town and at freeway legal speed I'd consider taking it off. But then it would gnaw at me that I didn't have the full compliment of equipment that Porsche mandated to get the most out of the car (not to mention that the tail also improves engine cooling). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193505745.jpg |

The tail is dead!!! I just removed it and replaced with the original lid. If it were a Turbo it would have stayed.
I'm curious about one thing? I'm no Porsche expert but I can say I'm experienced at driving fast(8 years driving on the Autobahn). I drive to work daily on the Autobahn and routinely max my car out at 150MPH-245KM on the straits. My car had the Turbo tail and no front spoiler? I had no control issues in the past and never was concerned? I can tell you from daily driving that the car is fine going at the limit w/o the front spoiler. I will take pictures of the new look and give impressions of pushing the car w'o the tail. Now I have this tail sitting in the Garage. If you live in Europe and want to come and get it it's free!!
