Turbo tail or not?
I wounder what you guys think about tails? I like the Turbo tail I have but it's not original. I feel this car should stay in the original condition it came from the factory. I have the original lid and I'm considering putting it back on and selling the turbo tail? i would appriciate your opinions. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193229909.jpg

I have 2 tails. I have the 1976 turbo tail that I put on to do drivers ed and just when I want the look. I also have the stock tail that is on it most the time. It takes me about 15 minutes to change them out. I have both marked so that lining them up is easy.
|
I prefer the stock tail over the turbo on n/a cars. Actually, I just prefer the n/a tail period, I just don't have much of an option.
|
Keep it stock. I'm opposed to cosmetic surgery -- unless of course the alterations produce a subject suitable for posting in the More Random Pictures thread on the Off Topic Board.

I think turbo tails look horrible on anything other than turbo-bodied cars. The Turbo tail is way too big and bulky for SC/Carrera flared cars, totally out of proportion.
To me, it always looks like someone who doesn't know what they are doing owns the car. They don't know the difference between a Turbo tail and a Carrera tail, and just bought the first "whale tail" they saw in the classifieds. Esp. when it's paired with no front spoiler at all, like on your car. |
Save the Whales.
Nothing looks more "Porsche" than that big whale tail. I love it. |
IMO easy choice: stockoriginalstockoriginal....almost always looks best - and works best.
Great looking 911 BTW!! |
Back to stock original...sleeker.

I've owned this car for two months now and have lots to learn. This is my first Porsche and I think I made the right choice with the 87 3.2. I've owned M3's and Corvettes in the past and they can't compare to the driving experience this car provides. I can't believe I waited this long to own one!!
I'm going to put the original tail back on it and be done with it. About how much could I sell the Turbo tail for? I'm sure someone would want it. It's just not me. I'm into classic things that are original. Thanks for the feedback, Jason |
Someone correct me if I'm wrong:
Carrera tail= Whale tail Turbo tail= AKA Tea tray Jason |

I'm not the expert here, but I believe your car will be very unstable at speed without adding a front spoiler if you use a tail.
|
No tail vs Teatray, I say no tail on that body.
I sold the turbo tail(tea tray) and got a duck. I love it |

He'll get better, I promise. |
If I'm not mistaken, the turbo tea-tray was a factory option on 3.2's in the UK. I *think* I remember someone telling me it was an option on SC's as well. Certainly used to see lots of them around at one time.
He also lives in Germany, so he might like the extra 100 pounds reduction of rear lift at high speeds over the Carrera tail (and the almost 250 pounds - ~115 kilos - less lift than no tail). But he should fit the front spoiler if he keeps it, my $0.02. (although, despite the stern admonishments you might read, I've also been told some cars were supplied new with rear aero and no front). I've got a tea-tray on my SC-flared car and like the way it looks. I've considered the Carrera lip on the turbo base - like the later Ruf CTRs - but the tea-tray is by far the more efficient spoiler. I think if I ever wind out my 38:29 5th, I want the aero and drag isn't really much of an issue... Now the 3.8RS, GT2/3 or 993TT wings? Oh yeh, they're way too huge for a narrow body... |
I had a ducktail on my '86 Coupe for the last 4 years. Just took it off a couple of weeks ago. I had forgotten just how classic the lines are on a 911 without a tail.
|
This is a common point of contention. I think the 911 is quite nice looking as it is. I think only certain 911's look nice with no tail. It really is i think mostly a personal preference issue. The Turbo tail looks fine on SC's. very small differences in the carrera tail and turbo tail, mostly the sides are brought up. Now on a pre sc 911 narrow body probably not going to look good, but remember the SC are flared out a bit, not like a 930 but not narrow either.
I have noticed a performance issue with running no chin spoiler on my 911, but it has a 3.8RS tail. I did lower the front about 1.6 inches and re-aligned it at Storz ghere in denver and it handles loads better. However I do still plan on getting a chin spoiler somehow. |
No, I like tail.

Keep the Tail ;)
