Need help deciphering an engine code
can someone help me to disect this engines code? 961 745. I am interested in an early 911 and the current owner claims this is the engine code in the car. Any insight is appreciated.

That is an engine serial number for a 1967 911S with Weber carbs (40IDA). The engine type should be a 901/02. You should confirm that number which is located to the right of the engine serial number.

Thanks much Tony. Any suggested outlets for reading up on this. I tried Bruce Anderson's book but found it to only be useful for post 69 cars. BTW I grew up in Pittsford!

Funny! I am a transplant from Canada via Seattle and now a dual citizen. I would check the 911S registry and get advice from the guys that live and breathe early cars.
BTW, this is great location for race tracks with Watkins Glen an hour and a half away and Mosport in Canada about 4. Mid-Ohio, Pocono, Lime Rock and several other less historic tracks all within 5 hours.

Yeah, great driving all over that area. I am a targa owner as well. 84. We'll see what happens with the "S". I have a feeling there is going to be a feeding frenzy on it.
