Shift Lever Mod

I have an 86 Carrera and I would like to move the shifter rearward but I can't afford a relocator kit at the moment.

So, is there any merit in removing the shift lever and bending it judiciously?

You must be short armed like me! I hate the fact that in proper driving posture I have to lean forward to shift. I wasn't aware there was a relocation kit! But I intend to do exactly what you suggest, either bending the sucker, or replacing it with something else all together that I can reach. I've come to the conclusion that this is a common complaint. Maybe one of our machinists on the forum could produce a more effective shift lever alternative, maybe build a short shift kit into it?

Just my thoughts...

Maybe I'll get a short shifter for a 100 bucks and tweak it. Then if anything bad happens I can put the stock one back in.

Do this in the car so you know how far to bend and to what angle, but only if you're careful with the gas welding tip. Use a hot flame so the heat doesn't migrate to the bottom and distort the shifter bushing.

Do this outside or in a safe working area.

Use plenty of protection (welding blanket, real thick gloves, etc.) and have a fire extinguisher ready, just in case.

Heat the lever away from the seats (1st/3rd/5th), then confirm.

There's a limit based on how close you want the lever next to your leg or seat in 2nd/4th/Rev (915).

An extension welded to the lever will bring it closer to the steering wheel but increase the throw distance.

A tall gear shift knob clamped to the highest location on the lever will extend the lever a small amount. It's slight, but noticeable.
