Targa rear window install

I'm getting my '72 Targa back from paint and am planning the assault on the rear window installation. I've searched this forum but can't find a definitive answer on whether the Targa Bar cover needs to be removed for window install or can it remain in place?
Anyone have the answer?

Thanks!

My Targa rear window seal replacement.

The cover has to be removed to replace the rear window and seal. I'm curious how they repainted your Targa with the rear window out and the Targa bar cover on.

Good luck!

Well, I called my painter who still has the car. He said that since there were no rust issues, he painted around the Targa cover. Now I know that the cover must come off anyway, I sure wish I had done that before. Anyway, now that I'm to have it off - any recommendations about bringing the stainless cover back to as close to factory condition as possible? Mine has fine scratches and scuffs from the last 35 years.
Thanks in advance!

I found a local glass guy, who on the side, does a lot of high-end and exotic installations that most glass companies won't touch. He wasn't cheap ($250) but did a beautiful job! Took about 3 hours and after watching, I'm glad I didn't try it myself. The biggest deviation from what I thought to be the norm was that he installed the glass in the car first and then installed the chrome moulding afterwards. He said that it is nearly impossible to wrestle the rubber moulding on the glass and the chrome at the same time. He used a spray "dry" silicone on the chrome and worked it into the rubber mostly by hand and with a small mallet. After it was all in he gently tapped a few small waves into place and it came out perfect.

Interesting note about the trim. This is contrary to all I have read in the postings, but after wrestling with the seal on the window I can see why you would wait. I will need to hunt down the "Dry" silicone spray you mentioned. I have had concerns about using any type of lubricant spray but this may work. I guess after all the time spent on this project $250 doesn’t seem all that bad...

Only bad thing is, it holds up any other progress based on the 72 oil tank position, and Targa bar mounts, the window has be competed to move forward. Happy motoring…
