Castrol R

I was talking about "The Old Days" with friend, and we both said we have not smelt Castrol R for a long time.
I see it is still available in the UK, anyone seen it in North America?
I think I might pick some up on my Christmas trip over and do the hot spoon thing (I could use Castor oil I guess?).

Anyhoo....I used to put a splash in the fuel tank of my Cooper S (another car I wish I still had) a bit boy racer I admit, but what a great smell!

The technical question is: as I seem to remember it making everything "sticky" when it burns off, I imagine it may cause valve problems with even a few drops in the (old '77) 911 gas tank?
As far as actually using Castrol R in the engine, I think the same applies, OK for vintage racers that strip & clean engines in their sleep every month with an "R" in it (Hmm... is that were the saying comes from !?)

I am sure this makes no sense to anyone that has never smelt it, I now have a junkie like craving since my memory has been stirred up.

That's funny, I use to use it in my Honda Elsinore and it burned real dirty compared to modern 2t oil and left a sticky gooey residue. I never had a piston seizure using that stuff. If I were to smell it today I'm sure it would bring back a flood of memories from the early 70's.

No comment on the Castrol smell, but god I loved the smell of Klotz 2-stroke oil back in my MX racing days.

I used to use the bean oil back in the 70's on my bultaco's that were notorious for siezing up if you weren't meticulous with your jetting and fuel. Never had a problem with the stuff at 24:1 but it was a given the the heads and barrel were coming off fairly regularly for rings and decarbon. You'll never forget that smell.

I don't think I'd add any of that stuff on a modern engine with a cat. I'm not sure it would cause a problem but a plugged cat is an expensive replacement part.

It is a smell familiar to anyone who spent any time at the race track prior to the '90s. Caster bean oil has a unique smell that takes me back to my youth. I used to use it in my 2 stroke piston port racing kart too, a great smell, and I would put my old leftover kart gas in a 2 cycle Toro mower as an incentive to cut the grass.

This thread has awesome timing. As I was thinking about the castor oil smell and Klotz's Gold formula smell just last week. I see where blendzall still has some of these available.

I have a case of it. I use to run it years ago for the smell. In more recent history, back when I had a yard, I ran it in my 2 stroke yard equipment for the smell and the neighbor liked the smell also.

I have thought about putting a couple of ounces in a tank of gas to see if I can get the smell.

I was thinking about trying to get some Castrol R. My girlfriend likes those little scented oil burners that you put a tea light under and I thought it would go nicely in one of those. Do you think she'd appreciate it?

I think you should try it. If she doesn't like it you will always know that what you did was done in good taste apparently gone bad.

Then you can follow up by opening a bottle of that 21 year old Scotch and fix everything.

I actually switched from the Klotz to Golden Spectro also. A year or two later I switched to Yamalube as Team Honda was using it so made the switch also. I used to really talk crap about oil, but looking back, I never had any oil related failures (just incorrect jetting failures ).

I have been using Amsoil 2-stroke oil for many years now as it comes in tiny small bottles is pretty cheap and it burns very clean in my Ultralight 2 stoke engine (250 hours or so with no issues and never a fouled plug). To simplify life, I also use it in my MX playbikes, chainsaws, weed eaters etc.

Just for kicks, I am going to go to the motcycle shop and see if I can pick up some Klotz to put in my snowmobile and lawn equipment...just for that wonderful smell!
