Talking Another question, Puff of smoke at 6000+ rpm's

I was turning up a street and had the accelerator buried in 2nd gear, at about 6500 RPM's car seemd to cut out and i upshifted to 3rd all was fine, but I looked in the mirror and noticed a big puff of brownish smoke. at the time it sort of cut out.

I'm thinking i hit the rev limiter?
Smoke is unburnt fuel, or st? please let me know.

Drove it fine this morning, upon startup a bit of smoke again, but very brief, and it drove just peachy to work.

I keep telling myself that I'm just going to drive it mellow, as i do not want to fork over a ton of money on a engine rebld. Should i worrry about driving it that hard?

Yes, like you proposed yourself, you most likely hit the rev limiter. Regarding driving habits I believe in the following four:

Very gentle cold start driving until properly heated.

Regularly exercised. Seems to drive better the more often one drives it.

Aim to make most drives at least as long as to reach full operational temperature. No short around the block trips.

Regularly use the whole rev band (not necessarily bouncing on the limiter though) at least on a couple of occasions at most trips. If not because of the addictive sound passing 5-6k rpm.

Your funny Livi! thats excellent advice and I think I definitely hit all those categories. i really do love the sound of that in the higher range. But the cold start thing I did not do. I will be more cautious then as it is pretty cold here in Colorado right now and i think taking a bit longer to get up to temp. my RPM idle has dropped off to near 600RPM at idle, I think I should turn that up for the colder months

Read your owners manual , it has section regarding running a cold engine. I believe it limits you to 4500rpm and below until temps are reached.

I get that a lot around here. In both senses. Have not a clue why.

"...and noticed a big puff of brownish smoke. at the time it sort of cut out."

Sometimes when an engine under high load and rpm experiences pinging, it will miss and puff smoke.
