Lift to Engine Stand

This morning I rolled project '83 cabriolet out of the garage so that I could use my scissor lift to raise the engine to the stand. This worked great -- I padded the lift with a moving blanket and just slid the engine from the moving dolly onto the lift, and then raised the engine to the correct height for the yoke to mate with the stand.

The cabriolet, of course, is now at rally height. With most everything out of the engine bay, I'll clean everything up and install a new OEM-type sound pad to replace the rotted mass that was in there.

Much of the weight removed is now here:

I've already started in on cleaning and checking all the fuel injection components in another area of the shop. Progress!

Brian

Insulation Pad...

Brian,

I have my engine down for some clutch and tranny work. I'm contemplating putting back a custom made silver finished insulation pad rather than the rotting factory pad. I know it's not original, but it just seems that it will look better and last longer than the original. What are your thoughts?

Here's how I got my engine out...

Hi, Mitch.

I think there's little doubt that the modern non-factory sound pad alternatives are a better overall product in terms of durability. I've also read that one can forego the sound pad entirely with little added noise.

However, philosophically, I'm pretty much a keep-it-stock owner. When I pop the engine lid, I want the engine bay to present much like it did on the car's born-on date. With my lift, I'm not stressed about having to go back in and replace the sound pad again in five or 10 years.

Mitch,

that wins as the most unusual way to raise a car that I've seen...
