Thoughts about cracks in fan housing?
Pulled my bad alternator out last night to put in a new one. All went smoothly until I notices cracks in the outer housing. About 1/2" long each, around the threaded bolt holes. Almost like someone in the past tried to pry the alternator assembly out without remving the shroud bolts.
Can I get away with it like this for a 3 day DE event? Not sure I'm going to find a good one and get it into the car in a week. Thanks

I have used JB weld for the last 1 1/2 years with no problem. However it continues to nag at me and one of these days I will find a housing with no cracks.

Give it the "water test." Throw the fan housing into Lake Michigan. If it floats, it's OK to use.
Seriously, when the engine spins 7,000 RPM in your car the fan is spinning 12,000 RPM. I wouldn't run it like that for five minutes lest the expensive fan break, or even worse, if the enigne got nice and hot and all of a sudden things came loose-- could lead to shrapnel flying around in the engine compartment and potential overheating, and you certainly aren't going to find one at the track (Gingerman?). A week? Engines get dropped and rebuilt in such time. These are available from time to time in the classifieds and a WTB works magic. Don't get the Vertex POS, however, I made better castings in the seventh grade with a sand mold and beer cans.

With new ones NLA, and the aftermarket ones not really living up to expectations, I'd say your overall options are limited. Let's see some pics...

Wayne: Would it make business sense for Pelican to commission the casting of some aftermarket housings that actually fit?

I got a replacement from PartsHeaven for what I thought was a reasonable price. I don't remember what I paid just that I thought it was reasonable.

Other than Porsche getting back into the picture the next besy bet is for someone like Pelican to get the rights, drawings, and fixtures from Porsche. That way the parts would be right and the markings would be Porsche. Call me crazy!
