Question G-50 Trans. History

I have heard that the G-50 transmission was used by Porsche in racing before it became the standard in production cars in 1987. Is this correct? Also, was the G-50 trans. available as an option on production cars before 1987, when it became standard? Thanks in advance!

All the information that I have read including Bruce Anderson's book all say that the G-50 entered production with the 1987 model year 911, replacing the 915 transmission.

Regards,
David

959's raced in Gruppe B and in rallying. I bet the 959 trans is what the G50 is partly based on? I see a sprinkling of "950" part numbers in the parts diagrams. 950 is the original designation of the G50.

So does anyone have any idea of whether or not the G50 transmission was available as an option before it became standard? Thanks Again!

Doubt it, the pre-G50 cars had torsion bar tubes in the way.

Viperbyte:

The Porsche PET parts listings available online only show the following for the 911 3.2L Carrera:

For 84-86: 915 transmissions are all that are listed
For 87-89: 950 transmissions (G50/xx) are all that are listed

As Zoanas mentioned (also stated in Bruce Anderson's and Peter Morgan's books), the rear torsion bar tube had to be changed in 87 to accommodate the G50 transmission. I'm not an expert but the weight of the evidence would indicate that the G50 was not available prior to 87 (at least not for production cars).

Regards,
David.
