The whole kit, new from PP, is $795 for the parts alone. Finding used will be less but you need the oil lines, cam tensioner covers, and the pressure fed tensioners along with new gaskets, correct bolts and crush washers for the oil lines. Better off with a new kit IMO. Labor extra.

I'm doing this right now and just ordered all my parts.

I've seen prices between $605 and $795 for the oil pressure tensioner kit. Just as important are the improved chain tensioner support arms - priced between $340 and $410 for both.

If you decide to go the 930 route you'll save a little money, but you should still get the updated chain supports.

Check the tab above. You will find this article:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_carrera_chain_tensioners/911_carrera_chain_tensioners2.htm

If you do not have already, a copy of "101 Projects for your 911" and a Haynes is a good investment as well (no Bentley for our '73s )

Are the 930 tensioners not problematic? I thought ALL pre Carrera tensioners had problems. I hope the 930 ones are fine, saves me a lot of money if so. I was planning on upgrading this winter. Does this mean I don't have to upgrade?

There are fans of both the 930 (improved original type) and the Carrera (oil pressure driven) tensioners; most people think the improved chain wheel supports are the real fix when combined with either improved tensioners. A search here will give you lots of opinions.

I don't think the money is much different (the 930 tensioners can be found for $484 + gaskets and nuts vs. $609 for the Carrera kit that includes everything.

I did not remove the engine on my 70 when I added the chain tensioners.
Everything unbolts easily. Just be carefull when you tighten the covers. Magnesium can strip easily. You can do it in an afternoon. Keep the chains very tight. I used a couple of small turnbuckles one end had an eyelet the other had a hook. You can buy the special tools but cheap works just as well.
Buy the turn buckles and you will see what I mean. My engine is back to gether so I can't show you If you (or someone) can post a picture of your engine sans the covers I can sketch something in.

If the chains slacken and skip teeth you will spend more time trying to figure out the timing.

I already have the 930 tensioners so if the Carrera upgrade isn't necessary I can spend the money elsewhere.

Are you sure you have both the 930 tensioners and the chain wheel supports? Did someone pull off the chain housing covers and look at the tensioner part numbers and the chain support bushings?

The results of tensioner failure can be catestrophic; $1000 is good insurance against a $10k engine rebuild if you don't know for sure .

Well, my car is a 930 so wouldn't that mean it has 930 tensioners? Are the ones you're referring to later production meaning mine wouldn't have them? As for the supports, I have whatever the factory installed in 1979. I guess I'm asking "do I need both the tensioners and supports or just the supports?"

I believe updated idler arms were implemented in mid 1980. You should update with new or good used idlerr arms.
